1996 Acura TL 2.5 overheats - Should I scrap it? Sign In

I bought the car roughly 5 years ago and it worked great for a while. It didn't have heat when I got it so the next winter I got a shop nearby to replace the heater core. So I had heat that winter, and it continued to work pretty well, and then the next summer it began overheating out of nowhere. I took it to the shop again and if I remember correctly, the water pump died. So they fixed that and I managed to get at least another thousand miles out of it. At the time of this post it has over 230k miles on it lol.

It began overheating again shortly afterward and I got so tired of dealing with it that I stopped bothering and let the Acura sit in my driveway for a couple years while I drove a different car. But last year I took it to the shop again (a different one) and they said there was an air bubble in the water pump line or whatever it is. There was also at least one engine fan not working, and they supposedly fixed both issues and they said they drove it around and it didn't overheat. But literally the next day I only drove it a few miles and it began overheating again. At that point I was so fed up with dealing with it that I didn't even bother taking the car back to the shop and I let it sit in the driveway for about another year.

And so earlier this week I finally decided I'll either try to fix it one more time or scrap it. I started it up, and as usual (exactly as before), I'm able to drive it around for a little bit (almost 2 miles) before it starts overheating. It's like the cooling system works fine for a short period (temperature gauge will stay at halfway) and then out of nowhere it shoots into the red within a matter of seconds.

When I drove it earlier this week I tried turning on the heat at full blast to see if that would help the engine cool, but no heat was coming through the vents. My father says he thinks the heater core is probably somehow blocked, which makes sense. I'm betting that's why there was no heat when I bought the car. The previous owner probably bypassed the heater core to fix the overheating issue and didn't tell me about it when he sold me the car. Plus, one of the engine fans doesn't seem to be working (again)... even though the last shop I took it to said they fixed that!

Sorry for the long-ish post but hopefully my perspective is clear. I would actually like to fix the problem, just so I can feel like I finally "won" haha... but at the same time... maybe I should just cut my losses and scrap it. What do you think?

IDK - I think the first issue was never really fixed just bought time. It smacks of just being low on coolant or adding vapor thru a blown head gasket type thing it's probably had for a while just not way too extreme.

230K? Now it sat for a year helped NOTHING and added some issues you probably didn't have, fuel gone bad and maybe brakes rusted in one spot?

Throw in a battery probably too.

If body and dinky items throughout the thing are all very good it would cause some thought to fix or give up and I'm not helping much.

I'd probably just give up but max out what you can get for it if you can as you probably won't get much more that listed weight of metal for scrapping it.

The other thing is what other services are you behind on that haven't cause a problem yet? Guess if not right on top that make my final vote to move on and you'll still spend something on another,

I'd say it is time to scrap it. 230K miles and the engine has been overheated numerous times. Just isn't worth fixing unless you want to pour a several grand into it and you love it. It's not a rare collectable either and in fair condition is worth only $900 and that is running.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
