1996 Toyota Camry 4 cyl 2.2l engine, auto, 134K miles. Some time ago, idling became a bit uneven - I wouldn't say rough, just a tiny bit shaking when idling in Drive. It seems it was lacking just a little something - if transmission is put into Neutral at stop, shaking disappeared. Now time to time idling becomes really rough and the engine stalls if I don't rev it up. No matter if the engine is cold or hot, it might happen all the same. If I just leave the car like this, it will still be idling very rough and stalling after a few seconds next day. But if I rev it up for 2-3 minutes, it comes to senses and everything becomes normal again. This happens quite frequently - once every 100 miles or even more frequently.

Check engine sign never lit up, and accordingly, OBDII reader shows no codes. Replaced spark plugs - old looked normal, by the way. Looked under hood in dark - no sparks. All hoses look OK. Any thoughts on what to test?

Thanks in advance

When you changed the spark plugs, you see any oil down in the spark plug wells? Are the plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor original? Wires do wear out even though you might not see any leaks. Oil down in the wells make the boot swell up.

Next time it is running rough, you can also disable cylinders to see if you have a misfire in any particular cylinder. You can do this by unplugging one injector at a time. Cylinder that doesn't make a difference is the one that is missing.

Once you identify which cylinder(s) is missing, you can figure out if it is a fuel injection, ignition, or mechanic problem with that cylinder(s).

You could also have a fuel delivery problem, so you should monitor fuel pressure when the problem is occurring. You'll have to use a fuel pressure test gauge with adapters to plumb in after the fuel filter.

Just a couple of quick things you can try......If you haven't cleaned the throttle body, it would be a good idea to get a little brush, some throttle body cleaner, manually open the throttle & clean it out, start it up once & while so you don't flood it out...Even if it doesn't solve the surging, it's a good thing to do as maintenance.

At the mileage since the shaking goes away in neutral I would take a look at the engine mounts. They may have harden & are transfering vibration, just jack the engine when it's vibrating with a floor jack & block of wood, if the vibration goes away, the mounts are bad...
