1996 Grand Am No start Sign In

I ahve a 1996 Grand AM.
I bought it from a friend in Brighton, I live in Canton.
When I bought it the engine was making a strange ticking noise and i wan't quite sure what it was.
I drove it all the way home with no problems.
About a mile away from my house the noise changed sounds though.
It went form a ticking that followed engine RPMS to like a constant rattling.
I parked it in my garage and left it there for about a week.
After a week went by I started it back up and the ticking sound was back to normal.
Only it seemed louder this time.
I drove it about a quarter mile down the road when it stalled.
I started it back up and drove about another two feet before it stalled again.
I then waited about 5 minutes started it back up again revved the engine up to 2.5K RMPS. all of a sudden the motor cut.
Now it wont start and all.
It won't even turn over.
Please Help
My friend said it might be the timing chain tensioner?
And that the timing chain is jammed up somewhere in the housing.

I wasn't exactly thinking clearly when I revved it.
Its like a Quad4.
2.4L Twin Cam.
It has like 156K on it though =\
And yes it had oil in it.
Though it was a little black.
Oh and no holes in the block.
I think all the damage is internal.

i'm assuming that you have battery power, etc, starter works etc..
try turning the engine by hand, you know socket and breaker bar on front crank pulley bolt....just to see if it will budge.....if not then start pulling things apart to inspect...i.e.front timing cover ,oil pan etc....
had to say without being there....but from what you describe ,thats where to start...

Well there was one problem when it started but that was after it started.
It sounded like the starter was grinding after it started for only a second.
This was when the key was in the "on" position.
But that wouldn't be related the engine randomly cutting out.
Or my no start situation
Would it?

no ,as far as the random stall out concern.

but a starter drive thats stuck in the flex plate (flywheel) could stop engine from turning...

Re: 1996 Grand Am No start Sign In

Okay I'll check up on it soon.
I'm going to start pulling at it on monday.
Hopefully I can get some help at figuring out whats wrong once I get into it a little deeper.
Unimpressed
Its weird though.
Because when I go to start the car.
It makes a little click noise.
Like its trying to turn over.
But can't.
Thats kinda why I'm thinking timing chain.
I'm almost afraid to take the oil pan off to see what depree I have in there if any.
Could like a main cap or bearing be the culprite?

yea,,sounds like its locked if you hear a click, hard to say ,i'm not there..
but yea its time to rip apart (oops, i mean disassemble) now to inspect..
see if you can turn by hand
also see if you can remove some timing cover bolts and peek in to see whats up..
