1996 contour timeing belt broke

1996 contour timeing belt broke Sign In

i replaced the timeing belt and alined the cams up but it still wount start seems to flood out please help it hase a 2.0 engine

Recheck your timing marks. It is very easy to be off one tooth, and that's all it takes to ruin your whole day.Unsure

somebody told me that if the cam and crank sensors arnt alined then it will flood out how would u check the tdc with the belt off

The crank will need to be on TDC. That's the easy part. Aligning the cams and getting them to 'stay put' while putting the belt on is the trick. There is a tool that is used to hold the cams in place, and a special bolt inserted into the crank to ensure it is on TDC. The tools needed to do it are available thru most tool dealers, i.e. Snap-On, MAC, ect. Not sure if they are available at parts stores. Also, not sure if this is an interference motor, meaning valve damage possible when the belt breaks. If you don't have one already, I'd spend the money on a manual and the tools.

i have the tool for the cams but the manual doesnt say anything about a bolt for tdc so i just rotated the crank until number one was at the top and she still will not start

Is this the 2.0L ? I'm pretty sure that you have to use that 'bolt'. I can check Monday, at work. Hopefully, someone else will jump in, here to confirm or not. Is the cam tool, you are using, a flat bar that goes in slots in the rear of the cams?

yes it is a flat bar and i just use a screwdriver in the no 1 cyli. to find tdc

This is the bolt that goes into the crank that ensures TDC.
This is the kit that is sold..two pieces.

These things are super fussy about their timing.
That’s why they make you loosen the cam gear centre bolts so the cam gears will spin on the cams as you’re installing the belt. The cams are not keyed to the gears.
Once the belt is installed, tensioned properly; it’s then you lock the cams down.
Remove the alignment tools and rotate the engine at least two full turns and then attempt installing alignment tools.
If the tools cannot be installed; start over and adjust the alignment.

thanks i got the tools and found the bolt hole but cant figure out if im in the right spot on the crankshaft any help would be great

Dose your crank pulley have the notches in it like the illistration that Dan posted above? I think the alignment tool will only go in two ways. Either correct(#1 cylinder at TDC) or incorrect(#1cylinder 180 degrees off). Pull #1 plug and spin engine over by hand. When the air blows out of the hole you are close. Now use your tool and try to line it up by rolling the engine forward or back a slowly till tool goes in.
