This is a new mechanic I have only been dealing with him for 3 weeks. I have to give him a shot. thanks though I'm not ready to go through all this again. I am emotionally drained

If that code is a P1351 or P1361 that is an ignition control circuit problem, and you will have no spark when that problem occurs.

When it doesn't want to start, it will have no spark when that code is current. From there they need to do an ignition bypass test to check to see if the ignition control module can fire the coil. The ignition control module bypass can be done with a 12 volt test lamp connected to battery positive. With the ignition on, touching (like your doing morse code) the tip of the test light on the IC trigger circuit (white) at the ignition control module connector should make the coil spark. The circuit has to be back probed.

If you have no spark when doing that, you need to check your powers and grounds at the ignition control module. If power and ground are good, you have a defective ignition control module.

If you do have spark during the bypass test, but no spark while cranking the engine, you either have a problem with the PCM or the white wire going to the PCM.

Inspect the ignition control module connector really good. Have seen a lot of them where the wiring breaks in the insulation up near the connector and/or the terminals aren't tight causing a loose connection with the pins. Wiggle the wiring and the harness around if the engine is running, to see if you can cause it to stall would tell you if you have a wiring problem.

Have you mechanic watch this video on how to do a bypass test on the ignition control module. Even though this is a Lexus it can be done on your Jimmy the same way.

I am still waiting for him to call. I feel like this is as close as I have ever been to figuring out what is wrong. Call it womens intuition.

Don't know where your mechanic got the description for ignition coil driver circuit from that P1406 code.

P1406 is the EGR pintle position circuit. Means the PCM isn't seeing the right voltage from the EGR valve's position sensor.

Your mechanic has to be missing something during the basic check for a no start. Does it have spark at the coil wire and can the spark jump at least an inch air gap?

Since this P1406 code is popping up, the mechanic should monitor the PCM's 5 volt reference voltage with a volt meter and make sure the 5 volt reference voltage isn't being pulled to ground by a short somewhere. If the 5 volt power supply is being pulled down, that could cause a no start too.

thank you for your time. my mechanic left for the day. I told him that I will print this out for him for monday. I'll just keep the truck there. If this works or any thing else. I will post. I would hate to see this happen to anyone else.

I knew of someone who had a similar problem a few years ago...they ended up dropping the fuel tank and found cherry pits in the tank that kept getting sucked into the fuel line intake. Someone didnt like him...lol

The fuel tank has absolutely nothing to do with the P1406 code you're getting.

Re: 1996 gmc jimmy intermittenly won't start Sign In

my mechanic said that he checked out what the code said and that's not the problem. It's running a little rough when I take off, that is one of the signs that in a couple of days it will not start. He said next time it doesn't start he will change the distributor. I don't know if that makes sense or not. thanks for your post

Re: 1996 gmc jimmy intermittenly won't start Sign In

hi well my last posting was that my mechanic changed the ignition coil. I have not had any problems with it starting, but the truck runs really, really rough on take off, it actually back fired once last week. Once it goes into second gear it runs great. My brother is going to look at it today to see if there is a crack in the distributor cap or something. If I have anymore problems with it starting I will post thanks

Re: 1996 gmc jimmy intermittenly won't start Sign In

Might seem overly simplistic, my son has a '96 Jimmy that had many of the same symptoms and I discovered a dead short on the hot lead from the battery to the starter. Replacing this starter cable solved the problem after spending a lot of money on everything else from starters to relays. Once the dead short was eliminated we have had no problems at all. I don't know if this is what your problem is but it may give you something else to have checked out before spending any more money on your vehicle.

Gee, wasn't the smoke and melting wires a hint?

The welding arcs under the hood and maybe the electrical fire would be a good indicator too. LOL
