1997 Ford Expedition troubles

As mentioned, i have a 97 expedition that has been running great. Today however the check engine light came on and it appeared as if nothing was wrong so i arrived at my destination and shut the engine off. When i got back in i turned it on and the light was still there. I started driving and the car started shaking anytime i had my foot on the gas pedal unless i had it revved to a high rpm. Also anytime i stopped it shook also although not as bad as when im accelerating. What could be the problem? Any help would be awesome

Have the codes read at an auto parts house like Autozone. They will read the codes for free. Post the codes back here and we will guide you through the repair. More than likely you have a misfire in at least one cylinder. If the code is from P0300 to a P0308, you have a misfire on a cylinder. The cylinders are numbered as follows.
Passenger side front to rear----1--2--3--4 P0301--P0302--P0303--P0304
Drivers side front to rear----5--6--7--8 P0305--P0306--P0307--P0308

i was gonna do that but it started storming extremely bad so i will do it tomorrow probably. I have had this problem before and it was the number 5 cylinder misfiring so do u think it is the same one or a different one? My thinking is that if the cylinder was fixed correctly it would be a different one.

Have you done a complete tune up on it? If it has wires, I would replace them also if it hasn't been done in the last 30 to 35 thousand miles. Do not scrimp on the wires or plugs. Use Ford plugs (Motorcraft or Autolite)and a good quality wire set.

how hard is it to fix a hitfiring cylinder? i took it to a shop before and will probably do the same again but i might try fixing it myself if it is an easy process...

Just a thought to add: I had one of those when it wasn't all that old with two vacuum moulded elbows that failed. Hard to find new and one real hard to get at. They can be done with I think 10mm fuel line hose making a loop-de-do for the right angle needed,

The codes still need to be read to see ehat the problem is. It may be as Tom said and be something other than a misfire. Have the codes read and post back. If you can't get to a place to read them, see if they have a loan a tool program and do it yourself. Let us know.

ok i just it checked out and the code is P0133 which is the CO2 sensor. Can i replace that myself?

Yes you can replace it yourself. But before you do, have the code cleared and drive it until the light comes on again. It could have been an intermittent problem. If the light comes on a gain fairly soon, the O2 sensor is the front one on the passenger side. It can be changed with a 7/8 inch wrench, or there is a tool made specificlly to remove the sensor. Your local parts store may have a loan a tool program.

If the engine is shaking, clearing the code will not cure that. You are going to have to find which cylinder is causing it to shake. The O2 sewnsor is fairly easy to replacew but may be haer to get to. You might need to have someone check to see why it is misfiring. When you had it repaired before, were all the plugs replaced? It is hard to determine which cylinder is misfiring over the internet. I would look to see what was replaced last repair and find what was not replaced and look there. If all plugs were replaced aqnd not wires, I would recommend replacing wires first. If the vacuum leaks, as Tom suggested, are completely ruled out--you may want to have a technician check the compression and mechanical workings in the valve train.

Would there be another code telling me which cylinder it is? Cause the only code that came up was the CO2 sensor and if i replaced that would the shaking go away?

Not sure if a code will tell which cylinder. It runs rough so you will have a code and the oxygen sensors will react first to the engine misfiring for any reason.
To tell if this is a single cylinder or random misfire you can put something over the tailpipe while idling and it will demonstrate a single putt or random putt. Normally it would just be a smooth flow of exhaust gases.
With the single putt a trick to find which cylinder is to cancel them one at a time (unplug plug wire in need be but ground it) and go check the exhaust trick and see which one doesn't make it worse. Chances are this is a single cylinder (vacuum leaks and fuel problems tend to be more random) so find which one. From there you can try to figure if it's a wire or plug - who know - both? If a mechanical problem with that cylinder you may need some help to diagnose as w2o suggested.
Don't wait to figure this out. A stupid bad spark plug could end up costing you sensors, a converter or more for waiting. No bargain in that,

The code you gave is for the O2 sensor on the passenger side in front of the catalyctic converter. So I would concentrate on looking for a miss on the passenger side of the engine. I have seen Ford's not put a code out for a misfiring cylinder even though it seems the entire vehicle is shaking. Find out what was done to repair the last misfire and see how many parts were replaced. If only the one cylinder was addressed, there is a good possibility another cylinder is causing the shaking. Just remember we are not ther to put our hands and tools on the vehicle and we are throwing out our best guess.

I just had this same thing happen to me about an hour ago with my 97 Expedition. I was driving down the road and it just started to shake when I would give it gas and it would run rough. Seemed to idle fine it was just when I'd give it gas. Didn't really seem to notice as much if I stepped on the gas hard. Check Engine light was flashing. Got home shut it off and started it back up and the check engine light stayed on. I have a pretty good $100 code reader and it gave the P0302 error and said it was a"Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected" so yes it will show which cylinder it is. But the other guys on here are proably alot better mechanics than me so I guess it could posible give you the cylinder. But the new code reader should show you cylinder.

It's nice of you to jump in & try help the poster out.....I'm guessing you didn't notice the date like HT mentioned.....A good rule of thumb is, if it's a week or 2 old your post may go unnoticed by the original poster....
I did pay a little bit more for my code reader, but no matter what the cost, one thing you should keep in mind when pulling codes is that the computer is only reporting what area is being affected and not what part is bad.
Knowing this can help keep the cost down on changing parts that aren't bad........
