1998 Mercury Sable Sign In

So it started about a week ago, I'll go to start up my car and all i can smell is burnt rubber. There's more exhaust than normal too. I've been needing to replace my brake pads for sometime but I don't know if that would have anything to do with it.

If you smell this at start up sitting still the brakes are NOT the issue but if your nose is accurate about the odor I would suspect the belt is fighting/slipping with a belt driven item. Take it off and spin the pulleys.

More exhaust? If cold many cars put out steam from that which gets less as it get warmed up.

Brakes. Tend them fully not just pads. Rotors must be either turned (don't like that anymore) or new and even the best ones are not that bad vs turning which I think shortens brake life and most rotors will warp needing another sooner as they don't leave a lot of extra metal on them,
