1998 Mustang 3.8 Manual Starter problems Sign In

My engine hydro locked about a week ago, but we were able to purge the water and it now RUNS fine. However, when you try to start it now it just clicks and all electronics go off. I've hooked up my Aspen's battery and that let's it try to start, but now its making this sound here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/19Y6xD9uXVtjcpXyRa_fTq0Uei0K0z7Z6/view?usp=drivesdk

I think its skipping gears but even so it still gets the engine above 1000 rpms and wont start even with gas applied. Any ideas?

What do you mean it "hydro-locked"?

Did it flood?

Ran through a puddle, it got in the intake and the engine locked up. Managed to purge the water but we did keep trying to start it with it locked until the old starter started clicking

Your problems are far worse than you are expecting. When you sucked that water into the cylinder with the engine running, it immediately bent the connecting rod/s, possibly even broke one or two. That locks up the engine.

I have seen this many times and I'm afraid you'll be looking for another engine.

No no you didn't read the whole thing. It hydro locked at idle so we managed to purge the water and get it running with a push start. It RUNS fine but starting it without pushing it is the problem

OK, so you have to diagnose you starter problem.

Do voltage drop tests on the cables and see if it's a connection problem or a bad starter.

Do you know how to do a voltage drop test?

I replaced the starter but it's now making the sound in the video I linked. It doesn't start at all with it's own battery so I know I need a new battery but it makes that sound when connected to a good. Battery

That video won't play.

if you know you have a bad battery, then replace it now. Stop trying to work around known problems. If it still doesn't start after that, then go back to where you should have started and do a compression test to see if there is any internal damage.

I know the battery was the problem, that's why I hooked up a new one and it started sounding like its skipping gears and the rest of the ignition system wont go on with it

Get a new battery. take the negative cable off the block and body, clean those areas and cable & terminal real good, with a wire brush or emery cloth. Clean the positive cable to and try again.

Yes to all suggestions so far. I question the lock up from any routine (if such a thing) puddle was probably much more serious didn't think "Mustangs" were so subject to suck up water - some are worse than others.
Look hard - you've done the starter the block may have cracked off a chunk or just there still but cracked. That or "ring gear/flywheel" there took a hit. Sudden shock of cold on hot - not good.
Purging water? This is to say with plugs out you turned engine and water poured out plug holes? Idling only - doubt that's the end of that if so big time.

Back to what Hammer said you probably will be looking for a good used engine but just might find one if car overall is worth it and might be or if you really like it parts for another if room make one great one these cars like some others folks keep forever some well hidden as "Sunday" drivers I call them,
