1998 Toyota 4 Runner 6 cylinder 3.4 200k Miles My thermostat reads that the temperature is in the normal range after driving for several miles. When I shut off the engine, I hear and see the coolant is boiling over from the reservoir bottle. Again the temperature gauge shows no sign of overheating. I've checked the oil and it's clean and clear. Is this a thermostat problem or something bigger?

How is the coolant level in the radiator when the engine is cold? What is the condition of the coolant itself? Inspect the radiator cap. It is designed to hold pressure to raise the boiling point of the coolant. It is also designed to allow excessive pressure to bleed off into the reservoir and to allow coolant to be pulled back into the coolant system from the reservoir when the coolant cools and contracts. If the cap isn't functioning correctly or holding pressure, it can cause the coolant to boil at lower temps and push back up into the reservoir. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
