2000 Corolla engine noise

It makes a quiet, steady knocking sound, like at the pace of a machine gun but very soft - with the radio on you might not hear it. It only happens when I get up around 50-60 mph, and only when I put slight pressure on the gas pedal. If my foot's off the pedal or if I press hard to accelerate, the sound's not there.
Any idea what it is? Is it serious?

Guess: Could this be an exhaust noise and not the engine at all itself? Flex pipe can be funky and erratic,
