2000 Durango 4.7l 4wd won't start

2000 Durango 4.7l 4wd won't start Sign In

About a month ago I drove it to town and back home, about 30 miles. It ran just fine. I filled the gas tank while I was out. A week later I went to start it and it cranked properly but it wouldn't fire. Then I noticed the fuel guage doesn't move either. I turned the key to the on position and heard nothing from the fuel pump. I replaced the fuel pump module. But it didn't change anything. I'm not sure what to try next, any suggestions? Thanks

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.



Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.


2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.


3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

Ok, thank you for your reply! What you say makes sense to me, and I will follow the steps you suggest. I think my way of trying to "guess" the bad component is more novice. I did forget to mention in the initial post that I checked all the fuses and relays, the fuses all looked good and the relays passed the functions checks.

Doing those test answers a lot of questions.

The fact you don't hear the fuel pump prime says a lot also. Do you have a volt meter and know how to use it? Does the check engine light come on(bulb check) when you turn the ignition on?

I do have a multimeter, I used that to check the fuel pump relay and the automatic shutdown relay, after I watched several YouTube videos on how to do it. I'm not proficient with the multimeter, but I can usually just follow instructions. I don't get a check engine light nor do I get a trouble code. Just the fuel gauge doesn't move and it won't fire.

When you first turn the ignition to on, not start, the check engine light should come on for a bulb check. Does it do that? When you check with your code reader tool are you able to communicate with the engine computer or does the code reader say something like unable to communicate?

The check engine light actually doesn't come on at all, I hadn't noticed that previously. And I don't have a code reader of any kind. Should I buy a code reader, or a diagnostic scan tool of some kind?

If you can get your hands on a code reader that would be good. You can see if you can try to communicate with the engine computer. If the reader can't communicate and the check engine light doesn't come on, it is a strong possibility the engine computer isn't powered up for some reason or its 5 volt reference circuit is shorted to ground. Without the computer working, you won't have fuel pressure, injector activity, or ignition.

Ok thanks, I've never used a code reader or a diagnostic scan tool, and I only know enough about them to know there is an almost infinite variety out there. I would actually like to own one but I don't know what to buy. I would like to stay below $150 and if you think a basic $15 code reader is all I need I'll be happy with that too. What do you think? Any specific recommendations or will any of them be capable of checking the computer?

The auto parts stores in your area should carry a line of obd2 diagnostic code readers that aren't too expensive. Try the code scanner in another vehicle that has OBD2 to check out how it works.

Another thing you can do to see if the PCM is alive is to measure the 5 volt reference circuit at one of the sensors under the hood. The MAP or TPS sensor isn't hard to get to and each has three wires. Use your volt meter and measure the voltage on the violet/white wire at the sensor's connector with the ignition turned on and your meter's negative grounded on the negative battery post. You should see 5 volts sitting there.

You want to check the voltage on that wire with the connector plugged into the sensor, so you'll need to back probe the connector with a pin or small paper clip that you touch your meter probe onto.
