Car:

2000 Mazda Protege ES
1.8L
144K miles

Problem:

I'm hearing a noise when I accelerate sometimes. It sounds like either a belt slipping or some loose part rattling underneath the car. It doesn't do it all the time. It seems to only happen when I accelerate slowly and after the car changes gears, or it starts when accelerating up a hill. But even then it doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all. The sound goes away after I let off the gas. I don't have check engine light on. It's not even that loud of a sound. It doesn't sound like the typical super-loud screech of a belt slipping. If I have the radio on a bit and the windows down, I can't hear it.

Does this sound like something that would happen from a belt slipping or could it be something loose that's rattling a bit? It's hard to identify exactly what the noise sounds like. Maybe if someone had a similar experience or knows what more questions to ask me to get to a better solution, that would be helpful.

Thanks!

*edit: Just realized this should probably be in noises forum...too late, sorry =/

You're fine where you are. Have you tried running a higher octane fuel?

I would give it a try to see if it's an ignition ping.

Actually upon opening the hood and listening very closely, I detect a very faint clicking. I think I'll change my oil first. It has been almost 9k miles. I replaced spark plug wires and plugs within last 5k. If the oil change doesn't help then I'll try the gas.

Duh, yeah I think you'd better. That's one of the dumbest things you could do to your car.
