2000 Nissan Frontier won't start

2000 Nissan Frontier v4 2.6L (I think...) 80,000 Miles I have a Nissan Frontier that wont start. When I turn the key to start it sound like the starter engine fires over and over in a put put sound but the engine never begins to fire continously (basically doesnt start). The engine then sometimes makes a deep rumbling noise but still does not start. The radio and the internal lights and the headlights turn on so I dont think it is the battery. Could it be wet wiring? Also, kind of embarrassing but I am not sure what to listen to when people ask "does the engine turn over?" Any help is appreciated.

Terms used when discussing cars should exclude "turn over" unless the car is upside down! If the engine is cranking normally but not starting you would normally just proceed to find out what is missing - spark or fuel. Some can lose both. Test for each and report what you find and we can help from there, T
