2000 chevy truck slow initial start Sign In

Hey guys, 2000 Chevrolet truck, 5.3 engine. Truck does not want to start in the mornings, spins over more than usual. After turning key off/on 2 or 3 times it starts better. I can hear the fuel pump run for its initial 2 seconds. I then put a fuel pressure gauge on. On the first try it went to about 45 psi. Second time about 58 and goes no higher than that. It also leaks down faster than I think it should, about 1 psi per second. I then clamped off the return line and checked the pressure and I got the same result. After troubleshooting the truck started right up, but normally you have to "wind it up" in order for it to start like it used to. Truck has a little over 110k miles. The fuel regulator hose is dry but I don't think this should affect initial startup. Any other way for me to check regulator, pump or checkvalve?

Yes, that is leaking down too fast. Did you try pinching off the feed link before the gauge once you build pressure?

UnimpressedThanks, No I thought about that later, so you say just to let it build pressure and then pinch off BOTH lines? That would seem to point to a leak in the injector area somewhere, but that would seem odd as once the truck starts it runs great. Its just after sitting for a while, especially overnight that it has the problem. I see a lot of leaking regulators, and fuel pump/checkvalve problems and I'm trying to diagnose it correctly. Also what should the pressure be on that truck? I thought 58 (with good flow also) was OK as it would be a little higher if something wasn't leaking...THANKS!

No, I'm saying now that it passed on the return line test, run the same test on the feed line to find out if it's leaking back through the fuel pump check valve.
