All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

It is hard to run those tests where there is limited income. Is there any cheap way to do those tests with items around the house?

The spark tester can be purchased for under $5. The noid lights and fuel pressure gauge can often be borrowed or rented from one of the national auto parts chains. Most of them have tool loaner programs.

Also make sure your theft light isn't flashing or on during your no start. If you turn the ignition on and 3 secs later the theft light is still on, you have a PATs problem.

What is a PATS?

Passive Anti-Theft system. The key has a transponder inside the plastic portion that sends a unique code to a receiver under the dash. If the signal code from the key is correct, the receiver sends a message to the PCM to allow the engine to start. If there is a problem with the system or the key itself, the system will activate the theft light. Note: The theft light comes on when you turn the ignition on and should go off around 3 secs. If not or the theft light flashes, you have a PATs problem.

PATs (passive anti theft system) often you see a key like symbol flashing or on steady...

only easy inexpensive test that may help- have some one spray carburator or brake cleaner into the engine air intake as you try to start- does the engine try to start when being sprayed? A quick test to check for spark vs fuel missing.

The first test would be scan for codes even if the CEL is off- and a fuel pressure test BUT the above test may yeild some clues.

My husband tried ether spray in the intake and then tried starting it. But didn't work.

Re: 2000 f150 4.6l tritan v8 wont start Sign In

it a 2 person job- one sprays the other tries to start.

I would then check for spark- or voltage and pulses at coils-

I suspect there are codes stored that would help BUT you claim limited tools - this is BASICS spark fuel then compression cks

Slow down with that ether. That stuff is dangerous if you use too much of it. You can blow the whole top of your motor off.
