2001 Chevy accelerating on it's own Sign In

2001 Chevy Malibu, 3.1, 125,000 miles. Never had this issue before, scared the crap out of me. Just left home, less than 2 miles away, & car starts revving & accelerating on it's own - also very very difficult to brake. Turned back home, had to throw the car in park to keep from crashing through our fence. Once in park, car instantly revved to 3000-4000 rpm - immediately shut it off and then distinctly smelled burning. Any ideas? Talk about a wild ride - very psycho to be behind the wheel of a car that accelerates without me pushing the gas and doesn't want to stop despite my mashing the brakes! Thanks in advance for any ideas or cost projections.

Check and make sure the accelerator cable's not sticking at all.
