2001 Ford Taurus SES engine misfire Sign In

Hello all, I have a 2001 Ford Taurus SES with the 3.0 OHV engine. Recently the car started running rough and I discovered using an inductive timing light that the #2 and #6 cylinders weren't firing. I went for the easy stuff first by replacing the plugs and plug wires with no change. I then replaced the coil pack figuring that I had a bad coil. Still no change so I then replaced the crank position sensor which was a long shot; but still no change. I have DTC's listed below. Any ideas?

The one code that I would be concerned about since you don't appear to have spark on 2 and 6 would be the P0352 code. That means the PCM (powertrain control module) didn't receive an IDM (ignition diagnostic monitor) pulse signal from the ignition control module which is integrated into the PCM. 2 and 6 are companion cylinders. That means they share the same coil.

The IDM pulse is generated from the kickback voltage that occurs when a primary coil's voltage collapses in one of the three primary windings. The IDM pulse is a way for the PCM to verify that a coil has fired once commanded.

Inspect the wiring harness and connectors from the coil pack to the PCM. You may need to check those circuits for the 2&6 coil for continuity and no shorts to ground or power.

At the coil pack the yellow with white striped wire is the 2&6 primary coil ground wire that runs from the coil pack to the PCM. It's a straight shot, no inline connectors between the coil connector and PCM connector. At the PCM the white/yellow wire goes to pin 78 at the PCM connector. If continuity is good and there are no shorts to ground or power, more than likely the PCM is the culprit. There could be a bad coil driver or coil driver circuit in the PCM causing the problem. To verify you would have to connect a 12 V LED test lamp or watch voltage at the PCM connector with a DSO to see if the PCM is triggering the circuit.
