2001 Hyundai Accent Not Starting Anymore? Sign In

I just recently acquired a 2001 Hyundai Accent, got the car for free from a buddy and it's been sitting for a year, I started it up and it runs perfect. So I drove it for a while just a little bit, then one day I get in it. I go to start it and it starts right up like usual. I noticed the blinkers didn't work so I turned the vehicle off, looked at the FuseBox by the Driver Side Door, checked all the fuses and it seemed that they were okay. So I put them all back, perfectly, all tight and in there. So then I started the car again to troubleshoot the headlights some more and it simply would not turn off.

The starter is kicking over and the vehicle is trying to start but it just doesn't. So I put some Starting Fluid in the Carb, It tries even harder to start up but it just refuses to get to that point where it will stay running. It just keeps conking out trying to turn over. Then I start thinking, "Did the Timing belt just screw up on me?". I noticed that the fuel pump wasn't turning on anymore, so I got the pump to turn on after drawing power to the fuse spot for the Fuel Pump. Tried starting it, and just refuses to start once more. When I put Starting Fluid in it, seems to get to that point where it's almost about ready to turn over but just will not no matter what. Even holding the Throttle open does not do anything.

So I am worried that it is the Timing Belt because I have no clue what else it could be.

Timing belt won't cause lighting or fuel pump issues. Could be a power supply issue. Would be interesting to see what the ignition coil supply voltage is while your cranking the engine.

Check fuse 2 10A in the dash fuse panel. Make sure you have installed. If it is, take a volt meter and make sure you have battery voltage at the fuse with the ignition turned on. Then crank the engine and be sure you still have more than 10 volts at the fuse while the engine is cranking.

If it blows the timing belt, it won't have any compression. Once you figure out your issues and get it running again, wouldn't be a bad idea to inspect the timing belt. If it has never been replaced or it looks bad, replace it. You don't want bent up valves if one snaps.

Lol, I wasn't saying that the timing belt caused the Fuel Pump Problem or anything else. I think it's the Timing Belt, because I can't think of why other it wont start. It always started right up, but when I turned it off for only about 5 minutes and tried to turn it back on, it refused to start. So I think the Timing Belt Jumped or something, I checked that fuse you told me to look at, along with every other fuse. That fuse 2 10A in the Dash FuseBox says "ABS. Cluster". I am pretty sure that has to do with brakes I think, also all other fuses both in the dash and under the hood are fine. I can fix the fuel pump easy, but what I am really trying to figure out is why it isn't starting? I really want to try and avoid opening it up and checking the timing belt for right now, that's why I am looking for other reasons why it could of done that. I will check the timing belt at a later time, I just want to troubleshoot until I have to open it up and check the belt. Any other ideas?

That fuse is in the coil wiring schematic. The reason I wrote that is because the ignition coils and that fuse get power from the ignition switch. Just wanted to see what the voltage is on that circuit while your cranking the engine since you mentioned fuel pump power and lighting issues.

Gotta start somewhere eh?

Ahh I see, but I have already got the Fuel Pump to work, the car simply will not start. Not even with Starting Fluid, so something has to be stopping it from running. Trying to think if there is some sensor or something that doesn't allow the car to start if the condition isn't met with the sensor, I just don't know what that could be. Because I literally just stuck brand new tabs on it, started it up (Started RIGHT up), Turn off engine, 5 min wait, Try to Start, wont turn over just the sound of the starter wining trying to start it. Full tank of gas to :(

You had all the fuses out at one time?..........You may want to get a diagram of the block and double check all the slots real close......Some blocks have unused slots and you may have got a fuse in the wrong place....

I know what your thinking Sid, problem didn't show up till the fuses where played with. I was thinking the same when I started reading it.

There is always the possibility the belt could of jumped or broke and it is just a coincidence. You won't be able to tell if it jumped teeth unless you pull the top timing cover off (which is easy) unless you have a 2 channel lab scope laying around. If it has jumped a couple of teeth and hasn't snapped yet or jumped a whole lot more, you don't want to find out by cranking on it. If it snaps or jumps anymore teeth while your playing around, you'll be pulling the cylinder head off.

Hyundai also had a lot of issues with their crank sensors back then causing no starts, stalls, and engine misfires. They basically fall apart behind the cover. Without a scope it is really hard to tell if your cam and crank sensors are good.

I took 1 fuse out, looked at it and put it back in. Yes, in the correct spot. Then the car would not start afterwards, THEN, After it wouldn't start, I took out all the fuses and made sure they were good, not all at once, individually. So far this doesn't seem to be a fuse issue that I can see.

Here is the whole process step by step on what I did. Acquired the car, Drove car down the street to test it before I got tabs, Drove it 3 times in one day down the same street just to keep testing it before I got tabs. Next day, slapped tabs on it, started it up like usual, didn't touch anything but the blinker lever switch to check the blinkers. They didn't come on, I turned off the vehicle like usual by turning the key, then I opened the dash fusebox, pulled one fuse out (Forgot which one) it was fine, so I put it back in, tried to start the car and BAM, won't start. I am really sure it wasn't the fuse because I checked many times to see if it was a fuse. I am ruling that out.

Need to start some where then since this turned into a no start. Read this and post your results.

If you suspect something is up with the timing belt, then inspect it and make sure your marks are lining up to rule out a cam timing issue.

Yup....wouldn't be the 1st time something totally unrelated failed.....

Jumping around can be faster & other times just a time wasting deadend.......been there before.......or crossing a part off the list cuz it's "new"....That's always good for a wasted hour or 2......
