2002 1500 Silverado - intermittent engine output Sign In

The 4.8 Liter V8 Silverado stalled on me today and then when restarting it would run rough and I could only get up to about 1500 rpm in park or neutral. When this was occuring putting it in gear would usually kill the engine since it was running very abnormal. I popped on a new fuel filter (recently bought) while stuck on the gravel road. Later after sitting a bit I was able to get it going. Drove home and later went out for a test drive it worked good , BUT while cruising at about 55mph I punch it and the transmission shilfted down as normal and then you could hear and feel the engine was stuttering and the speed stalled at about 60 mph so I let off and re-tried with the same negative result. Later while at low rev the engine started running rough again. The engine chk light is not on! Anyone have any advice?

P.S. I did inspect the battery positive cable connector to the fuse block but only at the battery end, I want to inspect the other end of the cable where it terminates under the hood fuse block. YOu know just to look for corrosion, probably not the issue.

OK, if my chk engine light is no on would a code still show up.

Lastly, would it be wise to go to a reputable but smaller (non dealer) shop to try to save some $ or is a dealer the way to go if I can';t fix this my self?

Yes there are plenty of qualified shops other than than the dealer to service your truck. Like any business there are goods ones & unfortunately a few bads one.

If there isn't a regular shop you use, you can ask around, friends, family & neighbors. See who they like and don't and why.

It wouldn't hurt to have the codes read just to see if anything is stored, sometimes ones will set with no light but I misread your post. I thought you said the light did come on. I see now where it didn't...
