2002 Elantra Slow uphil, won't speed up Sign In

I bought a 2002 Hyundai Elantra that seems to drive just fine (it's my first time ever owning an automatic transmission) around town. It shifts into the first then the second gears just fine.

If, however, you want to go up hill, it slows way down, won't shift into the third gear until will into 4000 and still slows down even after doing so.

Also, trying to speed up quickly (like changing lanes in traffic) doesn't really happen.

I've started calling her the gutless wonder but I'm worried the transmission was shot before I bought it.

Any ideas?

When you try to accelerate, are the RPMs increasing rapidly, excluding the downshift.

Hi Hammer Time!
I wouldn't say they increase particularly rapidly no.

Also, pressing harder on the gas does no good at all.

That points to it not being the transmission. I would have the exhaust tested for a restriction.

Also have the computer scanned for any stored codes.

Wow. That's actually good news to me. I was pricing replacing or remanufacturing the transmission and it looks like that might be more than i paid for the car.

I like your idea about getting computer codes.

Thanks.
