I have needed to put a new engine in this VUE for over a year now since the timing chain broke at 117,000 (yes, I know... I should have replaced the chain BEFORE if broke, but you know how it is sometimes). It gave up the ghost on January 27, 2012 and has been parked where I towed it ever since. A friend took the top of the engine off and sure enough... bent valves, etc.

I'm in Dallas and have been a bus and train jockey and loving it, saving TONS of money on insurance and gas and all, but I need my wheels back for flexibility.

That being said, I have talked to a number of salvage yard guys and a few engine repair guys. The salvage guys all say there is a range of engines I can use from several other GM cars (Ion, etc.). Typical price for an engine with about 80,000 miles on it is around $600.

But then I talked to one engine guy who said I needed to make sure the engine was from the same engine group and that the emissions year was the same and that little things like sensors on the camshaft can be in the wrong place for the computer I have from the previous engine, etc.

I've been ready to pull the trigger and buy an engine before, only to get paranoid and cancel after that guy said those things to me.

So who is right? Can I put ANY 2.2L engine of this variety into this car (the salvage guys all have some kind of database that tells them what engines can be used where), or is there some subtlety like what I mentioned above that is going to bite me and cause a bunch of problems?

I REALLY need to get this taken care of because my car has been parked in the back lot at my workplace for over a year, and it just makes me look bad, of course.

Would greatly appreciate the sage advice you guys can offer me.

THANKS!
MC

The second guy is right. The emissions package need to be the same. Most junkyards have an interchange book that will tell you which one match up.
