2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup Truck Overheating Sign In

Hello! I was about to sell my truck, but I am not sure whether I should now or not. I guessed that having a mechanic repair my truck would be too costly. Here is my issue: My truck was overheating after about 15 minutes of driving. I didn’t have anyone look at the truck to show them where the smoke was coming from once my truck started overheating. I described where the smoke was coming from to an amateur mechanic and he thought that I had a head gasket that needed replacing. I had to move from my apartment and continued to drive the truck. My truck eventually began to have additional problems. It was hard to keep the truck from stalling out, especially when I slowed down or had to stop. I last drove my truck to Auto Zone about a month ago to have a diagnostic ran on it. I had a hard time getting out of the parking lot when I tried to leave - due to being on a slight incline. The truck kept stalling out and I had to keep recranking it. At one point a loud noise came from my engine. The noise sounded similar to a backfire. I eventually got my truck home. I was tired and forgot to look under the hood to try and see what that loud noise was. I finally believe that I now know what the noise was after having finally opened up my hood yesterday. The cover for the air charge temperature sensor was shattered. I took the cover completely off. The truck still cranks and it is hard to keep the engine running. The diagnosis at Auto Zone unveiled a few issues with my truck. I am pretty sure that the employee reading me the codes mentioned that there was an incorrect mixture of air/gas going into my truck. That problem is probably due to a bad air charge temperature sensor. Again, the air charge temperature sensor cover was shattered. I have very little automotive mechanical knowledge, but I am thinking that the bad air charge temperature sensor caused the cover to shatter. In fact, I am guessing that the sensor blew off and shattered the cover. I wasn’t sure what was supposed to be under the cover yesterday so I cannot say for certain if the sensor is still on my truck. I do not recall seeing anything located underneath where the cover rested. I am away from my truck at the moment, but I will check this out when I get home. Perhaps a bad (and now missing) sensor caused my truck to overheat and the engine to run poorly? Perhaps I don’t have a head gasket that needs replacing? I will check to see if the sensor is missing. I will look at the diagnosis papers that I had printed by Auto Zone. What do you think? Would a bad or missing air charge temperature sensor cause my truck to have the issues that I mentioned in this note? https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/symptoms-of-a-bad-or-failing-air-charge-temperature-sensor

That is a Mass air flow sensor. Yes, if it's smashed it will be a big problem.

I also deleted your duplicate question and moved this one to the engine troubleshooting section. One is sufficient.

Which engine is in this truck? Dodge never used MAF sensors on those engines. Do you have a picture of the part that exploded? Whatever exploded won't fix your overheating issue. You need to take it to a professional and have them diagnose the reason why it is running bad and overheating since you do not know much about vehicles. If you continue driving it that way, it's going to cost a lot more money in the long run.

He posted a picture of a MAF. I don't know if his part looks like that or not, apparently not.

It probably backfired and blew the MAP sensor apart.
