I have a 2003 Mazda MPV I just replaced my engine and nearly all of the sensors on it.

The engine appears to run great until it warms up when the water temperature is about 200 + degrees Fahrenheit it stalls.

I have one error code for the bank 1 sensor 1 oxygen sensor I replaced the sensor and I am still getting this code I'm not sure if this is causing or has anything to do with the engine stalling when it warms up

I replaced the camshaft sensor crankshaft sensor mass air flow sensor water temperature sensor several solenoids in the vacuum lines for the EGR I have checked and cleaned the EGR valve and the IAC valve and they both appear to be working I have checked for vacuum leaks and have found none and I have new intake manifold gaskets and there are no leaks around the intake manifold
I am stumped and really have been pulling hair out trying to figure this one out

OK, first lesson............. there are virtually 40 different codes involving 0/2 sensor and maybe 4 of them actually refer to a bad sensor.

The 0/2 is a reporting sensor and just because it reports something off doesn't mean the sensor is the reason.

Now what is the exact code number being set?

What position was the sensor that you replaced?

Re: 2003 Mazda MPV - Stalls when warms up Sign In

The code is P0301 in the sensor is Bank one sensor one the one before the catalytic converter up near the top back of the engine near the firewall. There is power at the sensor wires on the heater circuit (it's a 4-wire O2 sensor)

The socket for the O2 sensor what's bad one of the wires was pulled out of it so I took and wired the sensor directly to the harness with wire splices observing proper polarity and wire color and double-checking then triple checking the wires are in the proper position.

When I use one of those OBD Bluetooth units and display the graph of all the sensors on the phone the front bank 2 sensor 1 which is the sister sensor to the Bank one sensor one has a graph that has a nice sine wave look to it what the rear sensor has a graph that does not look the same and have some up and down with its voltage but not like the front bank.

Is it possible that I have a bad sensor that is not responding right or that the exhaust gases are causing the different wave because of something else?

? Whole replacement engine and the sensors you could find, this one with yanked out wiring?
? How long has this engine had to run yet at all? I'm not so sure it's ready for anything just yet,

Where do you get your information? That code has absolutely nothing to do with an 0/2 sensor.

That code indicates a misfire on cylinder #1 which will also effect 0/2 readings due to the raw fuel entering the exhaust.

Sorry I was remembering that code wrong....
looking at what I wrote down its p0031

The engine starts and runs fine it idles right about 750 RPM give or take but doesn't stall or have issues until the engine heats up. Wendy water temperature reaches 200 degrees to 208 degrees give or take the engine will just stall while idling and does so repeatedly right around the same temperature when it cools down it starts and runs again just fine.

I added an extra oil temperature gauge when I replaced the engine, and it reads usually around 63 degrees Celsius (they didn't have a Fahrenheit sensor on the shelf when I bought it) when the engine stalls

OK, different story. That code actually is for the heater in the 0/2 sensor.

Now, if you have changed the sensor and still have the code resetting, then you have an issue either with the PCM or the wiring in between. Most likely the wiring.

As for your stalling issue,

First eliminate all vacuum or air leaks in the system (very important)

. You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

This car uses a Ford style IAC and they are notorious. They can easily be removed and cleaned.
There is a slide valve inside that should be cleaned thoroughly with spray carb cleaner. Once it is clean and sliding freely. lube it up with some WD40 and reinstall it. Don't lose the gasket. It can be re-used.

OK, there's just a lot going on, new to this the whole engine! It needs some time to even get used to itself plus anything unplugged an re-connected now in question as you found out with busted wires to an O2 sensor.
Just basics it's cold running on defaults till warmed up then should learn what idle to hold. If not enough time about anything will stall or does on me a few times just a long disconnected battery = no power, no history in storage was all lost.

If this runs worth a dang even two footing it for idle can you drive it now and put some use on it?
Other: Lynn, MA I take it. Great I'm about 18 miles SW of you this weather really stinks so wet metal all soaked not much is happy about now give it a chance and chase down all the hook ups, vacuum anything, air intake integrity and that coolant is really full in engine well purged of air most not passive you need to really know or all bets off on any test results quite yet as I see it,

I have cleaned the IAC already and my other engine came with another IAC I even tried cleaning and swapping that one

I'm going to take apart and clean the throttle body I have another throttle body from the other engine I might as well clean and try swapping it out as well

Re: 2003 Mazda MPV - Stalls when warms up Sign In

I have been driving it and idling it until it stalls for a few weeks trying to figure it out.

what would be the best way to purge all the air out of the coolant? I did fill it and had some trouble with trapped air but it appears to be running right now maybe there is some air trap that I don't know about how would I go about getting that out?

Re: 2003 Mazda MPV - Stalls when warms up Sign In

Was this engine the exact same as the one you removed?

The IAC controls idle speed so if that is not being done, there is an issue with the IAC or related wiring/PCM

Is this thing stalling at idle only? Can you keep it running feathering the throttle?

Re: 2003 Mazda MPV - Stalls when warms up Sign In

The engine is actually out of a 2004 but the Mazda MPV uses the same engine 2002 through 2006, and I was told that the engines that had the same j in their Vin could be swapped out for each other.

You can keep the car running by feathering the throttle or by just keeping the RPMs up around 1500 to 2000... but it stalls at idle when it is warmed up.

OK, that takes us right back to an IAC or severe vacuum leak, assuming the firing order is correct and it's not misfiring.

Re: 2003 Mazda MPV - Stalls when warms up Sign In

Is there a vacuum solenoid that only heats up when the engine is warmed up?I've checked for vacuum leaks and can't find any and I've replaced most of the old worn hoses and connectors and used black silicone sealant on the vacuum hose connections that didn't have clamps like on the EGR.
One thing the 2003 engine had some kind of extra pcv vaccum hose but the 2004 I put in did not have that valve-I capped off that vacuum hose.

Try disconnecting your EGR valve and see if that changes anything.

I have unplugged the EGR valve already and it still stalled at idle when the car hit 200-208 degrees
