2003 Mercury Sable has developed a miss Sign In

Hello fellow car junkies. I was having an unusual problem with my 2003 Mercury Sable a few months ago. My local "mechanic" was stumped, and so I turned to this site. Within days I received a response from a knowledgeable mechanic and the problem was fixed. Now a new problem. The car has developed a heavy miss. It is most noticeable at idle, however, it also occurs at highway speeds and particularly on acceleration. The vehicle will miss, sometimes lightly and sometimes heavily, and then usually smooth right out and run fine. The engine is the 24 valve Duratech and the car has 48K miles on the odometer. It seems electrical to me, but, what do I know ? I'm a novice. I've thought about a bad plug wire or even a bad plug. But, the car has such low mileage. Is that probable ? Also, I should point out that even during periods of heavy miss, the car never stalls out. Please help again.... THANKSUnsure

Is the check engine light coming on at all?

That means it's likely not a misfire condition. It's pretty hard to do anything without some better info and data. We don't get to hear or see the symptoms to recognize anything.

I understand fully. Looks like I'm heading in to see my "mechanic" and his analyzer. Thanks...

Found the problem. One spark plug with a cracked insulator. Who would have guessed ? Smile

That's not so uncommon. It's usually done during installation or removal.

This happened a couple of months ago enroute from New Jersey to Palm City Fl. The car ran fine when I left Jersey, but, not when I arrived in Southern Fla. It occurred on the road somehow. It started as a very occasional miss originally and got worse over the next several weeks. These are the original plugs with 48K miles. Maybe a factory defective plug ?

Broken glass is hard to blame on the factory years prior.
