I've been a mechanic for many years, but my own car's got me stumped. 2003 Mitsubishi Galant 4 cylinder. 70k miles. The last 2 weeks, after starting, it would high idle for about 5-8 seconds, then rev back down. But today, it will crank, rev up to a very high idle, and then die, all within a seconde or 2. It's as if it starts for a split second but won't stay running. I've found if I put the pedal almost to the floor, it will stay running, although it's at a very high idle. Scanned for codes: None found. I suspected idle air control air valve immediatly, so I replaced it and to no avail. I cannot find a vacuum leak to speak of or anything. Any possible suggestions?

do you have a scan tool to look at iac/tps/02 readings?

I just have a cheap scan tool to pull codes. I just found a recall on these fuel lines getting clogged possibly. I'm just trying to figure out how to diagnose.

If it wants to run with the throttle at or near WOT, sounds like it is overfueling, as you are allowing more air with the throttle plates open. At WOT, the fuel is shut off. Don't overlook the CTS.

So would a bogus CTS reading cause it to overfuel?

Absolutely; The PCM depends on the 'info' the sensors give it to deliver fuel...If the CTS tells it that you are in Fairbanks in January, it's gonna dump a lot of fuel.

Ok, so I went and put on a CTS, and no luck. I am able to keep the engine running just by spraying carb cleaner around the throttle body. So I thought this would really mean there was a huge vacuum leak somewhere for it to be sucking in the carb spray. And I can't find one anywhere. What's the next couple steps?

Starting from right now - this car will stay running with spraying carb cleaner AROUND throttle body but not in it - right? That would suggest a large vacuum leak so take note of what spot it likes the spray.

If you are spraying into throttle body and that alone keeps it running then it's starved for fuel now for whatever reason not yet known. Is fuel pressure up to spec for KOEO test?
