2004 Chrysler Pacifica rough/dies at idle

2004 Chrysler Pacifica rough/dies at idle Sign In

Okay, my first post here, so hello all!
Little background,
working on this for someone who just bought it, don't know allot about it, 04 3.5 v6 AWD around 150k miles. AC compressor was the first thing I replaced, was making all kinds of racket. Along with the belt cause compressor chewed it up. I noticed then it had a hard time staying running when idling (but I think I may have sat awhile) so I drove it a little, got on the highway, probably 25 mile trip, temp and everything normal drove shifted an ran good while driving.
Problem is
when you stop and it idles down it will get real low (<500) and sometimes die, a lot of the time really. If you play with it and let it idle down slow it will sit and idle, just a little rough. But if you snap the throttle and let it idle down itself it will die every time.
I've also replaced
The alternator (was charging a little low,12.9-low 13) and battery cable ends, also a ground strap that looked pretty rough(4-5" long from motor to body by motor mount). Now it charges 14 at the alt and battery. Idle didn't change. Cleaned the throttle body and ran some seafoam through a vacuum line and in the gas tank, no change. Changed plugs so I also replaced the plentum gasket since it had to come off for the front plugs, still no change.
A couple things I found interesting
When I took a vacuum line off to add the seafoam the idle almost smoothed out, I don't know if it just made it idle up and that is what smoothed it out or if that maybe its vacuum related?? I looked and felt around all the lines and don't see any leaks. And also when you snap the throttle hard a few time in the engine bay you can hear what sounds like a sucking noise, but I can't tell where it's coming from. Oh and I almost forgot to mention there isn't any codes at all, stored or pending.

Im pretty comfortable working on cars, but I need help! Haha. Any suggestions would be apprciated, thanks in in advanced!

Seem like quite the project vehicle hope you have the time there's a lot you've mentioned I'll try just a couple out of that.
A/C belt chewed, noise from compressor? That (never mind if it works for now) can be a stopper and cause drag on engine, low idle out of range for it to compensate.
Alternator for low voltage and a ground wire found and replaced. Go slow sport alt was charging when lower and would. Belt was chewed up, ground strap involved may have done stuff too early that was OK??
SeaFoam thru vacuum line? I don't like that idea could be just me. It may have eaten right thru the vacuum line that stuff can make a hole in pavement! Great product just use it as little and on just what you want to not a blast (its named to do that) all over one or more things or sucked in thru whole intake scares me.
Just the food for thought now. Was A/C compressor a cause or result, same with alternator and now the SeaFoam did that surface a problem or cause it?
There's a lot going on all at once on a newly acquired vehicle.


I suggest do ONE thing at a time know that's done then on to the next when convinced each is done one by one.
Keep in mind idle speeds are and will be self adjusted and reset to a new norm with a fix or when power (battery power) is disconnected also lost any chance if so for codes but also doing stuff all at once you are not giving it time one thing to another is probably making this harder for you?

I should have explained better, these things were all done at different times I just wrote it all right now. First the AC compressor was making noise so I replaced it and the belt. You could move the pulley back an forth on the compressor, it was shot. So that problem is fixed. But the idle problem was there before and after. Few days later did alt and cable ends just cause I noticed it was charging low. Did that mostly just so it was done as a precaution. Then is when I got to the problem I'm working on now, the idle. I started with cleaning the TB, inspecting the back plugs and the seafoam, which maybe I shouldn't have done the?? IDK. I've seen it done and make a difference for the good so I thought it was an idea, either way that didn't change it for the good or bad it stayed the same. So a few days later I did the plenum and plugs (they were nasty) it may be a little smoother after that, but the original problem is still there. I was thinking about maybe trying to check the IAC?

OK, Appreciate your vigor to get this thing in order. Just clean up or do the IAC.
"Plugs Nasty?" Hmmm? The cause or result? May have to start with new?
Can you drive this, put some miles on it if safe to do so?


It's tricky - speak for myself a vehicle to be my own or another's? How much can you take on all at once like this till things prove each thing is finished?

I did replace the plugs with new, yes I can drive it. I think I'll clean the iac and drive it around some tomorrow, or well later today I guess.. haha.
