I got my grandmother's car. She had 34k on it and I have put around 10k on it. Purred like a kitten. I got an oil change and 4 days later I hear a pop and the video says the rest. I am hoping it is just a rod bearing or tensioner on the timing chain. I drained the oil to remove the oil pan and realized the idiots were a quart and a half shy on a motor that only takes 4 quarts. I decided to fill it back up with synthetic to the proper level and believe it or not it is quieter I don't want to replace the bearings if there is something easier even though that does look fairly straightforward Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Argh! Potential gem of a car now this. It sounds horrible as you said shocked it didn't light up dash with red warnings of low oil pressure, an icon of oil and or engine fault was losing pressure.
WHO DID THAT OIL CHANGE 4 DAYS EARLIER? IMO if a paid job it's on them could be complicated now that you've touched it?
Ask if that going to fly for you or usual deny it first.
IDK damage in full nor would you or other tech till seen may need sad to say another engine if really an oil fault.
Good luck at the age despite super low miles I want new stuff not my usual low mile used all checked out engine doubt any close also parting out whole engine??
Good luck too coincidental could have been an oil filter loose but IDK why not leaking now too?

It wasn't leaking oil they just didn' put enugh in or took some out and never put some in. They seemed a bit grumpy that I used a grupon and didn't get anything else. I doubt it was foul play but they definitely messed up because I drained into a 1 gallon milk jug and it didn't even fill 3/4 of the way. I am hoping it is just a rod bearing.

There is no such thing as just a rod bearing. If the bearing is the issue you are looking at a major rebuild but the smarter way would a be a used engine.

OK, I'd send this out for proper diagnosis since working on it where it is, is a factor never mind tools.
If used engines (they must match perfectly) are abundant ask the source just what they have ahead of declaring this a waste to fix.
Fixed up if other hard parts damaged, unseen or impossible except for patch and Band-Aid are not new again specs.
Op-Ed: Cars with super low miles, a relative or not also suffer rot of rubber parts the seal greases and fluids, tires don't age well still in a box - the list is endless.
If this was an outdoor car 10X worse. I've played with cool old cars for a lifetime just one 20 YO one w 19k original was by far the worst for every last thing that moved in it or was supposed to broke, leaked or stuck from old lube done once never again was sealed in.

Are you kidding me.
If you think you are going to be able to simply toss in a new rod bearing and move on you are in for a big surprise.
You have no idea how much damage you have and whether the crankshaft is damaged.
You go ahead and rely on you tube for how to rebuild an engine and I'll sit back and watch with some popcorn.

LOL, I thought there were no such thing as a rod bearing. I figure the engine is blown. I would just replace the engine, why rebuild it? If I can access the timing chain under the head cover and the rod bearing under the oil pan why not give it a go? I would hardly call that rebuilding the engine, and yes you can remove the oil pan, and easily toss in a rod bearing and move on, the question is if it fixes it, but thanks for the helpful input.

Garaged! The rest of the car should be worth this still. YOU do the searching just mark places for what you find for sure, BTW nothing for sure till you see it.
Scopes IDK maybe up thru an oil drain plug, thru spark plug holes.
There are other things totally that fool the diagnosis a whacking chain or totally fubar harmonic balancer. Towards trans the flex plate IDK even starter motor that responds and cranks could mess up and drive gear go nuts?
You said you can't really do too much where it is so find another place or send it out.
If really garaged can also mean it didn't go out much in lousy weather and all the other stuff good. OMG interiors get wrecked sometimes upholstery is nasty costly done right.
Don't give up just may plain want another REAL in person tech to sign off it's for real - it needs an engine not a fix to that one. You or tech might see cracks a wrist pin gouging cylinder wall you don't fix those block is junk and can't just fit parts in same bare block each has DNA from made new ONCE you never get that again for many things,

I can't listen to the noise now, so I'll listen to it later.
If it's in the chain area, then yea, go for it, sound like the car is worth it.
If you have a spun bearing, to do it right, at a minimum you would be looking at a crank kit and it this was 2017 with 34k on the clock then it may be worth the work and money, it's a lot of work.... but this isn't...This is almost a 20 year old car and even though it's low miles, you can't discount time. If this needs major engine repair, your safest bet would be to replace the engine.

Understod. I can match the numbers of the bearings to the engine. Toyota sized each motor differently. I am just going to replace the bearing for the 1 cylinder that is failing, check the timing chain and call it a day if that desn't work, I will sell it AS-IS. Already got an $800 offer. I might part it out as well.
