2005
Ford
Escape
3.0
150k

I recently did a the head gaskets on this car and got it back together. I had a timing issue, which I addressed and fixed thanks to a different thread.

I got it running now and it seems to run rough and has some kind of backfire. I understand these cars need to re-learn when the battery is removed. But this seems excessive.

When I start it up it revs and drops to around 500rpm, and bogs. It will eventually idle well, but with this backfire in the video.

Where should I start?

Did you end up having a baby? If so, congratulations.Wink

Is this setting trouble codes? If so, what are the numbers?

I did! She is the best thing I've seen.

It isn't throwing codes (yet). I messed with it a little more...

It runs great while it's warming up, seems even when RPM's are at or near idle. Right when the temp gauge starts to move up, the thumps start. Seems like it could be some kind of sensor, but I'm devoid of ideas. I'm done taking this motor apart, especially now.

Also, I have the heater up full blast and it hasn't taken in much coolant. Air is still cold, is there a better way to inject the coolant?

Edited.

Sorry, posted false info. I believe the sensor error was my fault and is the the cause of my problems.

Good morning everyone.

Just wanted to update those who may have similar issues in the future.

The car ended up leveling out somehow. I didn't change anything and the miss at idle basically vanished. I still noticed it would idle down after starting, but then the problem all but vanished after it was running for a few seconds and it would never turn off due to the idle.

The problem might have been the computer relearning the car. I only put about 400 miles on it.

The car passed smog and it has already been sold. I appreciate all the help I received!
