2005 Impala does not start Sign In

I have a 2005 Impala with a 3.4 Car was running fine. In the morning I tried to start it, but it will not crank over. The battery and plugs & wires are new. I had the ignition switch, modules, fuses, and starter checked all are fine. Everything seems to get power, but the car just will not crank over to start.

Do the headlights come on? Do the headlights dim when you try to start it? Have you tried starting it in neutral? Are you positive all connections and grounds are clean and tight?

The lights, radio, and all electrical work fine. All electrical connections are clean. Their are no leaks of fluids. All fluids are filled to proper level.

I'm trying to find a starting place here. Have you watched the headlights as you tried to crank it? If the headlights go dim as you crank it, we go somewhere else. Possibly an ignition switch or a fusible link. Have to start someplace.

No the headlights are nice and bright as can be. I thought it might be the stater solinoid. The solinoid is attached to the stater. I had the stater tested and it was good. So I asked the auto parts store if it were possible the starter was good and the solinoid bad and he said no. I'm at a loss with this situation. PLeaseeeeeeee helppppppp.

Any kind of alarm system? Maybe we can get some others to chime in with more ideas.

Yes it does have an alarm system. It's funny you should ask that question. Someone earlier today asked me the same thing. They also said that the alarm system could drain my power. Is their any truth that? Could that be my problem?

Only when I turn the alarm on or off. Yesterday I had to charge my battery because it was weak. Don't know if it can be because I had the car sitting for about 2 weeks. Since I can'y get it started.

Re: 2005 Impala does not start Sign In

Maybe on this one we'll jump ahead of ourselves and try a 10 minute relearn to see if that helps, if not then you're gonna have to roll up your sleeves & go to work.

Now I'm assuming this is a factory alarm system and not aftermarket. This won't work on an aftermarket system..

Hook up your charger so the battery doesn't go low while doing this.

Turn the key from the off position to the on position (do not try to start it) and let it stay on for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key directly to the start position and see if the engine will crank. If not turn the key completely off & repeat the process. If it is a relearn problem sometimes this could take up to 3 tries.

A little more than 10 minutes isn't the end of the world but don't try start it before 10 minutes or you just wasted 9 minutes & 48 seconds of your time.....

Let us know how you make out.....

The alarm system is not factory.

Re: 2005 Impala does not start Sign In

Ok then forget the relearn. What you should do 1st is verify that in fact the trigger wire going to the solenoid on the starter isn't getting any power when you turn the key to the start position. You can use either a test light or voltmeter. Get underneath the car and touch the probe to the small terminal of the solenoid and have a helper turn the key. If you aren't getting any power the 1st thing I would do before anymore trouble shooting would be to bypass the alarm.

If you have a hush panel covering the column area, remove that so you can see the column and wiring. It should be pretty easy to tell the aftermarket wiring from the factory wiring. Look for a big yellow factory wire in the column area that has been cut in two and aftermarket wires going to each end. Remove the aftermarket wires and using wire piercers, bed of nails or what ever you have handy that will temporarily jump the 2 ends of the yellow wire back together. Then see if the engine will crank...

Just a footnote with any factory wiring it's always better to backprobe a wire then pierce it when testing, but in this case the wire is already cut in to two so I don't think a couple of extra small holes is going to be a problem.....
