Wife called me at work, said she turned around went back home as van spiked temp, then cooled as she drove, even at idle, said she smelled "HOT ENGINE" smell, gauge spiked and then normal and then back? Water Pump? Thermostat?

Probably a coolant leak and it was actually getting hotter as it ran out of coolant but the sensor had no coolant to read from so it appeared normal. It can't read air.

Probably. Just hope she didn't do head gasket damage not. That will happen in a heartbeat when it gets that hot.

If i had a dollar for every time I was told that after finding a blown engine, i wouldn't be working.

If she drove it until the gauge came back down, it was definitely hot enough to fry it.
