I have a 2005 Dodge neon sxt 2.0 eng. 141,000 miles on it.I was driving about 60mph. Then the idle started to drop. I pulled off. as i did so the engine light came on. Then the car just came to a stop for a moment not even the brakes were working but it came to a stop. When I tried to restart its like it wont engage. It sounds like a wheel that is free spinning in sand. The Road ranger that stops said it sounds like the timing belt. The timing belt in the car has not been replaced. All I have done so far is get it home. Can anyone assist me on what it sounds like it might be or something else to check before having the timing belt replaced?

I would not recommend cranking it over any more. Take the timing cover off and see if the belt is attached or not

The 2.0 Liter SOHC and DOHC engines used in the Neon are interference engines. if the timing belt broke while driving there is a chance a valve came in contact with the piston. The only way to know for sure is to replace the belt and perform a compression check to see if any valves are not sealing.

sorry it took forever to reply, it was the timing belt. replaced belt water pump and cam shaft sensor.
