2006 VW Passat 2.0T - Lots of smoke

Starting from the beginning. We bought the car for my son in December and started having issues with it almost immediately, but I was able to solve them until recently. My son was complaining about the transmission so I took it for a drive one afternoon. Whenever the car was at a stop sign, it would lurch forward repeatedly. After doing some research, I decided to clean the MAF sensor and replace the PCV. While we were working on it, I changed the plugs and coil packs. We took it for a test drive and it seemed to be running better, temporarily. About a mile from our house, we started seeing smoke pour out of the tailpipe and then it started to come into the cabin. Lots of smoke. So much that a police officer followed us to the closest parking lot and wanted to call a fire truck. We towed the car home a few days later and I checked the cylinder compression and all 4 read between 120 and 150 psi. I did notice that when we pulled the plugs for the compression test, they seemed to have a lot of oil on them, they weren't soaked but it seemed a little excessive. The smoke seems to emanate between the back of the engine (exhaust side) and the firewall. I am a little stuck now, but was wondering if this could be an issue with the turbo. Thanks for any help you offer.

First you have to determine what type of smoke it was. Was it thick and oily smelling? Was it sweet smelling steam like coolant? Are you leaking anything? have you checked the fluid levels to see if anything is low? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
