2007 Kia Optima stalls ONLY after fillup
|
|
|
Car: 2007 Kia Optima V-6 with 106,000 miles. Problem: After filling up and stopping on the first click, when driving away from the gas station car stalls out. Stalls a few more times after restarting engine. After about 3 or 4 minutes of driving it disappears. ONLY stalls after filling up. No check engine light. Happened the past three fillups. Purge canister problem? Appreciate any help you can give. Cheers.

Is it setting a check engine light? Check the canister if soaked. It could be tricky if only does this a couple times and fine to pin this. It's true, don't ask for more than pump's click should click off faster if you go full speed if not doing that now. Seems silly but fuel in ground tanks for some time is still quite cold and some days warm to hot it does expand some just not that fast to notice. Try for laughs leaving fuel cap just a tad loose as a test but tighten again in a few miles or less as a test I'm thinking on this still, T

How low are you running the fuel before filling up? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The low fuel light comes on, so I'd say less than a gallon

Very bad idea and that is likely the reason for your issues. The fuel keeps the pump cooled and lubricated and when you run it low like that, the fuel gets aerated and overheats the pump. Many pumps seize on shut off.

Then why does it occur ONLY immediately after filling up, and not when the fuel is low? And why does the problem disappear after a few minutes of driving?

Because it is overheated when shut off and that causes it to seize. One of these times it won't disappear after restarting and you will be towed in.

OK, so if the fuel pump is the problem then I should be able to replicate this by driving until my fuel low light comes on. Stopping and turning the engine off. Turning the engine on after a couple of minutes WITHOUT gassing up and see if the engine stalls. Correct?

BTW forgot to add at the last fillup I only filled it to 3/4 full and had no problem. Only occurs when I fill it to the first click.

I'm not here to try to convince you of anything. Believe what you want. Do whatever you want. I've replaced many a fuel pump because people ran them out of fuel. Of course there could be something else causing this problem but I assure you that you will eventually be replacing your fuel pump if you keep this habit up.

You are causing this by running out of fuel. Now it's not surprise, T
