Hello! I've got a 2008 CX-7 that won't start. 2.4L turbo charged engine. 150K miles. Recently started making a loud noise noise after warmed up that sounded like exhaust leak. Was intermittent - wouldn't always do it. I know turbo seals are leaking but turbo works (or was working fine). Wife was driving and heard a loud noise (described by her as a grinding noise) and car died. It will turn over but won't start and makes strange noise while cranking that I've never heard before on any car. I took video showing timing chain through oil cap to verify chain hadn't broken. Can anyone tell me what is making the weird clicking noise while rolling over? Video can be seen here: https://youtu.be/MNryq7S8mUY. I do alot of my own car work but I'm not an engine guy. I suspect it's time to junk the car as it's not worth the cost of an engine replacement but I'm hoping someone can at least tell me what could cause this noise while cranking so I don't junk it over something stupid and relatively inexpensive to repair. Thanks for any help!

Just because a timing chain isn't broken doesn't mean it hasn't failed and jumped time. That is exactly what it sounds like when cranking. You need to do a compression test to confirm this but if it is true, you will be looking for another engine that that is an interference engine and will bend the valves the moment it went out of time. This is a good lessen learned. Never ignore the loud noises as the engine failure could have been prevented. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
