Hey everyone!
I am reaching out to this forum for a little bit of help. My friend purchased a 2008 B200 from a private seller which has turned out to be in rough shape (lemon). She had to replace the front shocks and also she had to pay for a sealing of the crankshaft as it was leaking oil.(hope that makes sense)
Since getting the car back from mechanic we are hearing noises every time we start it up. Many people have opinions on why but I am reaching out here to see what you guys think. We have people saying "belts" "starter" etc. Some people are saying they don't think the starter is seated properly since the repair but then I also heard if it wasn't seated properly the noise would be very bad.
We also bought the car in summer and the noise is happening since Nov when it got colder. Not sure if its related. Also seems to happen once the car has been off for a while. Any help is appreciated. Thank you all! Attached is a video of the startup.
Incase your wondering why we don't go back to the mechanic who fixed it, we have. He had it for 2 days and after 2 days his answer was " I left it in the cold and started it, it made no noise" but is not looking under the hood. We don't want to blame him for the noise we want to find out what is going on. We also paid mercedes 350$ for an inspection before having it repaired and nothing about a noise came up.

" I left it in the cold and started it, it made no noise" OK, so what are you expecting. They may have very large tool boxes but I guarantee they do not have a crystal ball in there. If there is no noise, then there is nothing to diagnose at that time.
There is a noise every time you turn it on after a few hours. His answer should have been. "I was too busy for 2 days and didn't bother checking what you asked". So I am coming here to see if anyone has heard this type of noise in the past etc. Thanks ahead time!

IDK - Try this as the video didn't help except for hearing a beep for key in ignition. Watch oil pressure gauge or warnings upon start up. If more than by real time of one second for pressure to build up the leakdown of oil being pumped is slowing or very slow highly suggestive of a worn engine along with what sounds like a rear main seal patch which isn't a cure just a patch to buy time.
If this is confirmed engine's crankshaft/camshaft(s) are worn. Hope I'm wrong for your sake but that's a death rattle for a dying engine,

Thanks for taking be time to answer I really appreciate it! So what you're saying is when turning on the endgame pay attention to warning lights and if they last for more then 1 second the leaking of oil is too slow?

If familiar with the sound of changing oil with a new empty oil filter most vehicles will make a couple knocks while oil pressure builds up AFTER filling the empty oil filter.
In a worn engine and this is pretty accurate the oil pressure is building while just cranking the engine and goes fast to the engine bearings which are not roller type but metal on metal till oil under pressure makes those tight if you follow me. When worn they leak out and takes more time for oil warnings or sensors to get the reading which is later if oil isn't building up fast.
Great test for checking a used car - watch knowing engine is cold (feel it if need be) and watch just with key on, engine off either oil light, gauge or both and how fast they go out. Till then it's entirely possible to hear a knock like out of oil which is a terrible sign if real but some limp along for quite some time and some don't.
I'll disagree that some fixes for that if worn are worth it depending on vehicle, types and why,

This makes perfect sense I fully understand now. Thanks for explaining to me. Do you think if the sound happens every time in cold. Is it possible for a car to make this noise and have no engine problems or does this usually indicate something is wrong?

Ahhh - to verify would still take some real testing and real pressure observations not just the gauges of the car.
Not trying to discourage you just say it's a common sign. I've personally owned vehicles that did that and knew they were rough as work only machines and got years out of them would oil knock when VERY cold for over 10 seconds doesn't sound long but stare at a watch it's a looooong time with inadequate oil pressure.
That case no mystery - it was worn, neglected but FREE to me helped a lot!

Thank you so much honestly it's just words but I greatly appreciate the time you are taking to answer my questions.
I have one final question. We bought the car used and obviously did not inspect it before hand (mistake 1)
Now I am trying to figure out if the mechanic or the original owner or just bad luck is to blame.
Mercedes said the car was leaking oil near transmission and crank shaft they quoted a high price . We went to a local mechanic who said he had the engine hoisted up and repaired the leak with a patch costed us about 1500$. Is it possible in any way he could have broken something or done a bad job or could it be bad luck? Does this problem happen over a long period? We bought it in summer and never heard a sound only now that it is cold. Funny enough the sound stared to happen after the repair took place but it also was cold around the same time.
