Prior owner obviously didn't keep up with proper maintenance and oil changes. What's the best way for cleaning camshafts and upper engine valve area out? I see all these engine flushes, but I have heard horror stories about the after effects. Any advice? The safest thing to do is leave the sludge right where it is. Any sort of flush will loosen large chunks of sludge which will plug up vital passages and lead to engine failure. A sludged up engine is basically a terminal problem for that engine. The only safe way to remove the sludge is complete disassembly and boil the block before rebuilding. Will stay away. Thanks for the info. Will find some high detergent oil for the changes from here on out.
