I have a 1991 chevy minivan w/4.3 engine with 170,000 miles. When I ground out the cylinders on the distributer cap, cylinders 3 and 5 show no change in performance. I checked for spark and they both had spark. I took out the spark plugs and they too had spark. I did a compression test on 5 and at idle it was at 25-30 lbs when I accelerated to about 2000rpm it went to about 40 to 50 lbs but the needle was rapidly fluctuating. I know a valve problem would cause it to fluctuate but I just can't see valves going out in 2 cylinders. Could this be a head gasket or a cracked head? Will either of these problems cause the gage needle to fluctuate? I don't see exaust smoke or water (sludge) in the dip stick or the in the pcv valve. Any Ideas?

What is the static compression on those two cylinders? If you running a dynamic compression test, those cylinders should be showing half what the static compression is. If that is true, you should have low static compression with those numbers. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
