4.3 vortec timing oil pressure problems

Hello I'm new here, I hope someone can help me. I have a 98 chevy s10 truck with a 4.3 vortec auto I just replaced drivers side hesd due to only running on 5 cylinders. I torqued to specs, I set timing to #1 tdc using balancer 2nd notch to indicator on cover, set distributor #1. Started truck noticed a ticking noise I then also noticed oil pressure gauge not working also check gauge light on. I shut down checked for obvious problems none were found. I unhooked battery several minutes hoping to reset during that time I checked for oil pressure switch figuring maybe unhooked somehow did not find. I rehooked battery started truck ticking louder gauge still not working. Now I am at a loss on what to do I'm scared motor will seize. I don't know if it may have something to do with timing or what? I've never encounterered a problem like this before the timing gave me alot of problems since it is not adjustable at distributor. Could this problem be related to oil pressure pump sensors timing could the cam be not in sink I have know reason to believe the timing belt is bad it ran fine on 5 cylinders other then loss of power and eating gas like crazy about 7 miles a gallon! I would appreciate any help here apoint in the right direction something. This is my truck I use to get to work and I'll miss time I cannot afford. Sorry for the length of this post. Steve

Just a thought here... Sounds like you don't have the oil pump drive shaft in the drive tab of the distributor. Suggest taking the distributor out and resetting it. Jim

Thanks Jim for the reply, would anyone have an idea, how to set the oil pump gear after removing distributor? any help would be appreciated.

I also agree with Jim. Sounds like the distributor. Sounds like maybe you might have even forced the distributor. But here what I've encountered with these 4.3 that the gaskets on these heads and intake sometimes can deteriorate and slowly make their way down to the pan and end up in the Oil Pump screen below. Which causes these 4.3 to have lack of oil pressure if not none. It may even sometimes register pressure then when you gas it the pressure falls instead of rises. I'm not to sure on this S10 but I know in the 4.3 they have in the GMC Jimmy is the same thing. I know it's a pain in the but to get to the oil pump on the Jimmy I mean A REAL BIG PAIN!! I believe it's attached to the the block.., So to remove the pan I would check with good book. I'm not sure if you have to remove the engine on the S10's cause of the difference in body types. But this is what I know. Hope I helped!

?? Did the distributor drop down all the way properly? I'd index it where it is now and pull it out again and see what engages the oil pump - slotted, hex at bottom of shaft. These types can be turned with a drill and tools (don't lose those down there!) and give you oil pressure. Just a thought, T Ps: Was oil pressure reading low before this job??

Thanks for the quik reply, to answer your question the gauge and pump worked flawless before I removed head. I actually got it running but poorly ran hard starting tried to retime it again then I noticed this problem with the oilpump and gauge. Would you know how I could line this up to work again? also the old gasket was removed in 1 entire piece.

Set it all to TDC,#1 cylinder etc...mark position of rotor, mark position of distributor base. Remove distributor, you can use a long screw driver to align the oil pump drive shaft with the drive tab on the distributor. Reinstall distributor aligning it to the marks and make sure it fully seated .
