'66 El Camino engine/carb problems

I own a '66 El Camino with a 383 Stroker and Holley 750. Recently the car started stalling once it was warmed up if wasn't being given gas, then it started backfiring, and now it's wanting to stall consistently and it'll only start with the gas pedal all the way to the floor. I've also noticed a strong gas smell coming from the engine compartment. Ideas/suggestions?

Would need a ton of info more than that to come closer for a guess. Possibly needle valve in carb that stops fuel from filling the fuel bowls isn't sealing and it's flooding over? Look and run a finger under fuel lines, pump and anything to do with raw fuel and go from what you find. If you smell it and runs poorly it should be showing itself. Question: What's with a 383 Chevy? Bored out and became that or something? Did you mean "283?" Doesn't matter for finding the fuel leak........ T

350 block with a 400's crankshaft = 383 Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

When you shut the engine of hot, remove the air cleaner and look straight down the bore and look for any gas dripping onto the throttle plates. did you check the choke ? choke pull off ? check float level - should be right at the plug level, if it is correct - let it sit awhile and recheck...

Unfortunately, the car won't start at all now...gas pedal to the floor or not. We'd found a burnt spark plug wire, so we put a new set of plugs and wires in , but now it just cranks and won't fire. The smell of gas has almost gone away, so I guess that's good... I'd love to get it to a mechanic, but I don't feel like having it towed.

Shoot - Now back to just crank and no start. Found a bad wire and plug but IMO they probably didn't cause a fuel odor up front if so. This could run for a couple seconds without the carb on it at all. Back to basics. Does it have spark at the plugs, compression (if really washed out with fuel could strip oil off cylinder walls or cause real harm.) What do you have for a fuel pump - OE mechanical or electric now? Having trouble thinking on ONE problem that could cause more or just bad luck. Fuel, spark, compression and on time is about what it takes to run at all so what's missing now? It backfired. For now just see if the rotor under distributor cap turns with a quick crank OR if you can turn it by hand freely as an easy check, T
