'83 caprice missfiring?? please help.

'83 caprice missfiring?? please help. Sign In

'83 caprice wagong 305cid 4bbl. i replace the carbon for the alternator. its work fine it charge the battery. i face aproblem theres two wire attach the altrn one for the battery and the other go behind engine. the second wire get damage. i replace the damage part with a new one. the old one was too much dirt and corroded. the car work fine for two days after that its to much hard to drive it. i replace the spark plug. i open distrbuter cab found the brush broken. replace it and the roter and the coil ignition. the car become ok in low rpm. if i have load and i need to accelerate more i feel not all cyl working and the engine shaking hard. the carbu can cause this problem. i wanna to replace whole wire bu where it go.
please help me i dont know what to do.

OK - you found the broken spring loaded thing on the coil so that should be done.

Been a while but though new coils for those came with the wires to place in the thing such that they would connect just right?

'83 Quadrajets were a fuss as most were and few could get them just right if the issue at all. Plain cleaning out idle circuit (where needle valves are hidden) required taking it off, punching out the hard steel caps that cover them so you can clean it out. This should also have two choke pull offs, primary (front) and secondary (rear) with diaphragms that can fail. Very doable to get set right but fussy. Not so much misfire when wrong but flood or bog downs upon acceleration.

Vacuum leaks wreck everything if not intact and in proper place. One problem is most techs that pulled hair out with those carbs are done with biz as I am.

# 1 check is that choke shuts off completely by heated element. With key just on run the round choke with wire should get very warm to hot by itself and may not. Easy enough to check and that will make it run like crap and flood if not shutting off on time. If OE it will be riveted in and you drill those out. GM made the late ones a real pest.

For now if you think this is carb issues you can just plug off rear one if it isn't right and stop it from being a vacuum leak. Front one you need and must pull off at a prescribed amount or you are just flooding out or if misadjusted too lean. Like anything they want to be set just right. Good carbs IMO just fussy to set right.

If declared the issue I suggest fix not toss for a redo job as most aren't right out of the box anyway unless you are missing needed parts to work with.

Try to peg whether this is fuel or still ignition issues. Plugs may have taken a beating with the coil issues and need replacing or at least heated cleaning but not expensive to just get new ones if all messed up,

thank you mr tom. i install new spark plug set before i discover the distr brush broken. i will install another set today and pray its going to work. if its work i sware i m going to buy you a beer when i come to america.

If they are real new and good - not dropped, cracked you can hold a soaked one with small vice grips where the plug wire attaches and warm up the sparking end with an ordinary propane torch till glowing. Just a trick that usually works IF the problem if soaked plugs only. Don't wire brush them but if a fleck of debris is on them just flick it off. I just mention the heat as plain air dry isn't always enough even though they can appear dry.

Watch out if you try that as they can stay hot a long time to touch to re-install!

Air dry isn't enough IF and only IF they are soaked. Might not be but always compare plugs to others and know where they came from. If one or more is odd or worse than the others pay attention to that one and that cylinder. Place to look later when it still isn't right if picking on specific cylinders(s)

Note: Don't over tighten taper seated plugs. Just a bit too much and they get so stuck it's a nightmare later. As always be gentle on plug wires and pull boots off carefully. Good ones last ages and abused ones can be wrecked new with mishandling.

Just keep in mind that anything about the high voltage items, plugs, wires, cap and rotor etc., will seek to ground the easiest way they can without regard as to whether they fire a spark plug,

i replace the spark plug ac delco R45TSX made in mexico. may be u didnt try acdelco mexican product but trust me its like chines one you have to plug it in the wrong way to make it work. any way i install the new set and drive the in the city its work fine for about 15-20 mnt. then i start feelin the shaking again. and maybe 4 or 5 cly working only. i stop the car and keep it idl i remove the air filter i saw som gas leaking from upper gasket in carb and from pump area. i tighte the screw littl bit it stop leaking from the gasket but some gas keep coming from the pump. its need to be rebuild. i buy two cans of ac delco carburetor tune up conditioner, and repair kit i will rebuild it and see what happen. its may first time with quaterjet ther is any tips can help me.

No problem IMO with Delco made in Mexico. Since that worked or seemed to for a while this is probably picking on specific cylinders.

One way to isolate which one(s) is to cancel them by grounding a plug wire at the plug end one by one watching RPMs. It will drop RPMs or stall maybe on ones working properly and not change on ones that don't work. No real special tools but nice to have a tachometer you can hook up at distributor on these era cars.

It's a bit crude but can also feel putts out tailpipe for the pattern of putts, just a tad of know how that it's either random or picking on one or more cylinder. DON'T BURN YOURSELF - USE A RAG!

Carb should not be able to pick on specific cylinders and would be random misfire. Need to know the difference.

Not sure what you have for equipment for testing what in a higher tech mode but those tricks work just not as fast.

If you find certain cylinder(s) then the chase is still why that one or ones are failing. Test first, act later when this is known. It's good info so far that changing plugs worked at all however the short time,

thank you man for helping me i appreciate that. i remove the spark plug cable from the distrb cab one at the time. stat the engine for 15 second i saw thick blue electrc come out in the same time period every moment. i try that with all 8 cable same think its look good. i check the spark cable wire with multimeter its in good condi from outside and inside. i wanna remove the carb and start rebuild it unless you have another idea its may help me.

Slow down just a bit. That check is good but doesn't prove spark reaches the plugs which made a difference. Whether new wires or what there's a clue there and I'd find out why first.

I'll suggest again a low tech way is to take plug wire off at spark plug, actually ground it with jumper wire to engine metal and go thru them all. I guess you could just leave them dangling on this and see if spark can be see (dark helps) jumping between wires or anything.

Carb is fairly easy but do test ignition out before complicating this with two things going on. Depending on your tool selection you can use a timing wrench when ready to remove it for 9/16th I think - maybe 1/2 inch.

One thing to watch is the fuel filter housing. ONE inch with a 5/8th flare nut. That housing has a near invisible plastic gasket at carb end - don't lose that! Never seal threads with Teflon tape either as that crap if shards get inside are a total pest to remove - just a warning. No solvents clears that stuff you just have to take it apart to find little hairs of it - stinks.

If you've never done a carb this is full of measurements and things that can be adjusted some you can really mess it up but let's take that on separately as it's involved but all doable. Mostly cleaning and checking, new gaskets etc.

Again - isolate which issue is the primary cause or one will confuse the other - trust me.

Away and off line after later today for a day and others here that no doubt know the idea for sure. Don't rush those.

unbelievable nightmare happen to me in the past two weeks. After two days of cleaning the quarter jet. i put it back to enginr the engine better than before but i was still feel the missfiring. i recheck the spark plug wire a gaine.you advice me twice to do that. i found no. 08,04,01 cyl weak spark from the wire and when i start the AC the spark gone.i found old wire for my father 1995 lumina install it in no. 08 cyl. i fix the damage area in no. 04,01 cyl wire. i think its get burn from tha manifold heat. i couldntt find anew set of wire in this st**pd country.after i fix the wire and rebuild the carb. the engine run smooth like before. i drive the car for couble days its run good. then i start smell gas. strong smell. i thought its from the carb fuel filter. its look fine i keep chasing the smell untill i found the gas leak from two places in the gas tank. i park the car and wrestling the tank out. i take it to exhaut welder. i told him to weldit with copper i think its better. after one day i take it back and reinstall it . no leak and its look good. its realy tough and stupid to work with the gas tank by yourself. the out side temp in this country get over 130 degree easy. i was going to work the next day with the AC on suddenly the AC stop working. and the windows not opening. i stop the car check the fuse box, all fuses look fine. i trace it untill i get to ign swtch. amazingly i found new one in the dealer. i install it now working fine.
*its take from me long time to post what happen to me. because i lost too much money i couldnt bought one hour at internet cafe.
only 2 parts in this circus was made in USA the air filter and the breather.
- beware i run my car in low budget. i wanna to save money so one i will take my car and com to america.

Can't make that pic show without joining some club and not going to do that.

In short - gas smell and leak is probably right at fuel filter. Put you finger under it and shouldn't be wet. Can be a pest right there and an invisible plastic (usually) gasket on the housing to carb.

Think real hard not to use Teflon tape that might work once and cost you a weekend to get the shards out messing up the show!

I'm good at those carbs that most people hated as they are like sewing machine repair!

I've also seen them go 1/2 million miles but they are fussy,
