Hi Jan - We may need more info but at this car's age I would check that the cable for the throttle (gas pedal) is NOT sticking and does return to its base idle position at the throttle body. You may need to take the air intake stuff apart to see this and the cable may be frayed and not returning to idle. With a helper you can see this and there could be two cables if an automatic trans. If you see frayed wire that has to be replaced and think a dealer only item.

It could have other things that are sticking and I like PB (power blaster) the best but WD-40 would work too it think if that's it. You can move this stuff by hand and NOT flood the car with fuel injection.

I agree with NOT driving this car if brakes don't totally overcome the engine. T

Thanks Tom,
I will check the things you siad to check. I will add that when we got the car home last year we realized it had come from virginia and had probally been in a flod or something ,because the engine had ALOT of rust on it .
Ordinarily my husband (who is now deceased) would have checked those things ,but due to health problems he was just wanting a car to drive. It did this same thing 2 x before but turning the engine off seemed to correct the problem. This time it did not help, also the pedal itself is "up" to where it should be.
Again thank you and I will get back to you if this does not fix it. I would really like to sell the car ,but do not feel comfortable doing so with this problem. Even if I told person I still have a conscious ,but they may not have a brain......Take care & thanks. JAN in NC

Floods: Engines and brakes DON'T do well with this. The engine runs so it's possible that it's something just sticky. Can't tell with a keyboard and perhaps you'd do well to let a pro take a look for probably little money. Let us know how you make out. T
