When starting the engine most of the time now, starter motor will disingage from flywheel and continue to run not turning engine. To me this sounds like a few teeth have broken on ring gear. I will inspect it shortly. What in the starter could alternately fail if pinion and ring gear clearance is correct to cause starter to disingage and continue to run?

If this just begins cranking and goes to a hmmmmm sound that would likely be a "starter drive" that has failed. They can be installed in your existing starter or come with a replacement if that's the issue. If teeth don't mesh and turn properly, it usually gives out a screech/grind type sound instead. Starter drive looks similar to this.... With starter intact you only really see the small gear, T
