89 3.0 toyota truck idle issues

89 3.0 toyota truck idle issues Sign In

I have a 89 1 ton Toyota truck 240000 mi just tuned up ,had 1 injector and fuel pump replaced ,but when you stop with foot on the brake the idle surges up and down until you let off the brake,but at times it idles OK.

You may have a vacuum leak in the brake booster. Try pinching off the hose and see if the problem stops.

That's the only thing with any relationship to the brakes.

Hose itself could be leaking. Take it off and plug it at engine and bet the idle issues disappear,

Yes, but that wouldn't be triggered by stepping on the brake.

Right - that wouldn't be just when hitting brakes - sorry to mislead on that. If pinched that may not have shut it tight enough for that test. Kinda has to be booster related or somehow something goofy with the check valve right at it,

Unless the brake lights are shorting something out but I don't see the connection there either.

It is also possible that there is a vacuum leak somewhere other than the booster and when you step on the brakes that much more vacuum is being used by the booster to induce an idle surge. There are a bunch of vacuum lines on the passenger side of the intake that could easily be mis positioned or not plugged in.
