Ignition Timing Caution: To prevent possible personal injury from a moving vehicle or operating engine do the following before performing the checks: - Engage the parking brake and block the wheels.
- Place the automatic transmission in park or the manual transmission in neutral.
- Refer to the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label located on the radiator support panel. Follow all instructions on the label.
- Refer to the Fuel and Emissions Service Manual for information on the bypass timing mode.
- With the engine control switch off, connect the pickup lead of the timing lamp to the number one spark plug. Use a jumper lead between the wire and plug or an inducting type pickup. DO NOT pierce the wire or attempt to insert a wire between the boot and the wire. Connect the timing lamp power leads according to the manufacturer's instruction.
- Follow all instructions on the Vehicle Emissions Control Information label. Start the engine, and aim the timing lamp at the timing mark. The line on the balancer or pulley will line up at the timing mark. If a change in necessary, loosen the distributor hold-down clamp bolt at the base of the distributor. While observeing the mark with the timing lamp, slightly rotate the distributor until the line indicates the correct timing. Tighten the hold-down bolt, and recheck the timing.
- Turn off the engine and remove the timing lamp. Reconnect the number one spark plug wire, if removed.

Was the truck running before you r&r'd the dist? If so you need to make sure you're on #1. Pull the #1 plug, bring it up on compression, put the timing mark on TDC & pull the dist cap and make sure it's pointing @ #1. Is it trying to start? backfiring? spuddering?

jtw; Disconnect the connector to the coil so that it won't spark. Remove #1 spark plug. Have someone 'bump' over the engine until you feel the 'push' of air from the cylinder. You can do this with your finger on the hole, or with a compression guage. As soon as you feel that 'push' of air, you will be nearing Top Dead Center. Then, very carefully, align the timing marks at TDC. Remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. It should be pointing to where #1 spark plug wire is connected. Follow HT's firing order. Remember, the crankshaft will go around twice. Only one is the 'compression' stroke. The other is exhaust stroke. You must be on the 'compression' stroke for TDC.
