bought a sunbird for what I thought was a good deal, soon after, during start up on a cold day, the engine became very loud, I describe it as a "diesel like" noise, it lost power, and lags when I try to punch it, I thought it was maybe bad gas, but after about 3 months there is no change, now Im thinking it might be timing belt or chain, or my valves might be screwed, if anyone has any input I would appreciate it, is it worth fixing or replacing the engine or do I just consider it a loss and discard the car. thanx

You need to rule out the timing belt. If it jumped a tooth car wouldn't run well, and it will probably break. Belt should look good and have proper tension. Hope this helps with the fix,
