93 Mustang sucking up gas!!

I have a 1993 Mustang Lx, 2.3L 4cyl, with 181K miles. I replaced radiator, timing belt & water pump. A few weeks later the catalytic converters clogged so I got both of them replaced. Six days later, they clogged so bad that the car almost caught fire. You could smell gasoline during this time and the car has really been burning gas since the new converters were installed. I then did full 30,000 mile tune-up, oil & filter (with oil cleaner added in), fuel filter, air filter, pcv filter, and new plugs. I also added fuel injection/intake cleaner to the new full tank of gas. I haven't changed the plug wires yet and I know that one has to be changed. However, the car still seems to be using more gas than normal and I'm really afraid that the converters are going to get hot & catch on fire!! What could possibly be causing this to suck up gas & dump it into the cylinder so that it doesn't burn properly thereby pushing it into the exhaust & catalytic converters? Could the Air Flow Meter possibly have anything to do with this? I need to know because I love this car, but really don't want it to blow up while I'm driving!! Thanks

The problems seems to have started after the timing belt replacement.............Put a vacuum gauge on it and take a reading, if it's low & shaky you've problably got the belt a tooth off, that could make a converter turn cherry red as well as some other problems... Did the engine seem to have less power and act sluggish after the work????

The water pump went bad, so I just had the timing belt done at the same time (7 years ago, they went out within a week of each other). I didn't notice any difference in power or being sluggish. No weird noises or ticking/etc.. Everything ran fine for about 3 weeks after the timing belt & water pump change, and then the clog happened on the way home from work. And when I had the cats changed, the mechanic said he didn't really see anything wrong with them other than they had been on the car for 17 years. Six days later is when it turned cherry red & sent smoke through the heater vents. After doing that tune-up over the weekend, the car sounds and seems like it's running fine, with the exception of sucking up the gas still. That is where the problem came in before because for some reason it's just burning the gas. I don't know if this is a mixture problem, pump problem, airflow problem (another mechanic friend said it could be the Air Flow meter). I've never had this problem so I'm at a loss.

Converters don't usually go out on their own. It's usually a driveability problem that takes them out... A lot of the time its timing issues will get a cat to overheat but excessive fuel could also do it.... This is an OBD I system (old school) so you would really have to start off with seeing if you have any codes and then looking at a datastream to see if any of the inputs would incorrectly be telling the PCM to add fuel. There are also outside sources that could be doing this, a bad injector, a pressure regulator with a broken diaphram... You can do a visual on it but barring that you really want to get a handle on this quickly or you will be replacing that cat again very soon........You can pull the vacuum hose of the regulator while it's running,if gas squirts out the port, then you found your culprit........

Problem is not 7 years old. I just added that to understand when the last time the water pump & timing belt went out. There were no problems then. I'm fairly certain that it is an excessive fuel issue, so I will have a diagnostic run. I am not familiar with injectors or pressure regulators so I think it's best for another mechanic to check it. Thanks for the help!!! Much appreciated. Could the timing being off cause it to add fuel like this?
