93 camry knocking issue

93 camry, 4cyl 2.2, started knocking slightly due to lack of oil, ran low and the light never came on. car stalls, add 4 quarts oil and ran engine for approx. ten minutes, not driving, just sitting idling around 1500 rpms trying to get the oil to go through. let off the throttle, car stalls, does this about 3 times. i hold the throttle around 2000 rpms for a couple of minutes, temp guage goes all the way up, shut it off, pop the hood, and the radiator explodes in my face. let the car sit for about 20 minutes, start and hold the throttle around 2000 while adding luke warm water to radiator. after water runs through car will stay running, idling hard and knocking lowly. i did not drive it at all after it stalled out the 2nd time. i shut it off and had towed home. can i get away with new rod bearings and an oil pan gasket or a rebuild/replace. also how much should parts and labor run me after market approx

Sounds like you may possibly need an engine overhaul. It may be cheaper for you to get a remanufactured engine then to have all that work done to find out the top end is also damaged. Steve
