A few weeks back, the heater stopped working. Then a few days ago, the engine started overheating. The gauge on my dash read very hot and smoke began to come out of the driver's side under the hood. I added coolant which did nothing, then I added water to the radiator, which appeared to be low and then when the engine overheated (after about 3 min. of driving), white smoke/steam billowed out from all sides of the hood.

You started out with what was probably an easily repaired coolant leak that caused you to lose your heat when the heater got an air pocket in it. Now that you continued to drive it, there is a very good possibility that you have done serious internal damage such as a blown head gasket or cracked head. I suggest you get it analyzed by a competent shop ASAP and don't drive it there, tow it.
