NO DON'T BUY IT. !! 3.1s have a good history but are interfence engines if the timeing chain goes wrong - the engine is a mooring! If you can tell that the noise is just a loose spark plug or something simple go for it but if it sounds like real engine knock it won't be worth it. My opionion, T

I drive a pontiac 6000 which is very similar to the ceira and my engine is louder then a deisel. Let me assure you that this engine is as strong as the day it rolled off the production line. pressure tested the cylinders at a solid 120psi a piece. Though my engine is different (2.5l 4) I would stand by this thing because it is a solid piece of machining. Given the fact that it is 20 years old, I could not be more satisfied with its performance. The sound may be nothing at all (proof being my car) but it may mean a lot of bad things. if you;ve got $500 why not right?

Like you said $500.00 is not a lot to lose on a potential good car. But comparing a 2.5Lt four cylinder to the 3.1Lt V6 is like comparing an apple to a grape. The older 3.1 engine was known for rods and mains failing. But hey if you’re willing to take the chance you may get away with pulling the engine, replacing the crankshaft and bearings. As long as whatever bearing is making the noise hasn’t spun in the rod or main bearing cap. If the bearing has spun then you’re into a lot more expense like rebuilding the complete bottom of the engine if it can be rebuilt. I also know what you mean about the little iron horse the 2.5 those things would have the timing gears chattering so loud that you could here them coming down the road from a ¼ mile away and they would still keep running. That’s until the gear finally strips throwing all the fragments into the oil pan for the oil pump to suck up and seize the engine. That is not the case with the 3.1 if it’s making any form of rod or main knock it’s not long for this world with out some internal surgery. LOL Dan. Canadian "EH"
