I have a 1995 dodge neon hiline. Lately it has started making a loud grinding noise whenever the car is running. The noise is constant but seems to be coming from the A/C compressor though I am not 100% percent positive. Is the A/C compressor a possibility? Would it make the grinding noise all the time? or should I be looking elsewhere? Thanks, Kevin

The best place to start is to pull the belt(s) and rotate all of the pulleys by hand. Listen carefully for any rumbling noises when you spin the pulleys. If you find one that is loud, or if the bearing has excessive play in it, replace the component that the pulley is attached to. The use of a mechanics stethoscope is also a big help for noises like this. If you have a long enough screwdriver, you can put the tip on the component and put your ear on the handle. This may help you pinpoint the cause of the noise easier. The screwdriver will act like as a stethoscope as the noise will resonate up the shaft and into the handle. Steve
